Definitely a gothic soap opera. I was impatient with it being long and drawn out. As Daniel says, "The abridged version, Fermin, for goodness' sake." :D I could have been happy with Nuria's manuscript at the end, which I loved.

Here is a story of why I am the best friend ever. Way back in aught 5 or so (oh my god, how was that a decade ago), I worked at Random House. I was and am still a smoker; I could and do tell so many stories about how smoking has directed and redirected the course of my life (here's one about books!). Anyway. There was a guy at RH I knew a bit because we smoked at the same time, and eventually I learned that he was like the head of marketing for a bunch of the big imprints. At one point he made me a casual offer that if there was any book I wanted an advance copy of that was from one of the imprints under his auspices, I had to but ask and he would find it for me. (My god, I miss those days.) So first I swooned. Then, tentatively, a few weeks later, I asked him for the new Barrico. And he got it for me! Emboldened, I then requested Embroideries, and, later, Karen Russell. He continued to deliver, nonplussed. THEN, many moons hence, I heard that Murakami was coming out with a new book soon (this was in early 2006, of course). Trembling with anticipation, I asked the fellow if there was any remote possibility that he might have a proof of it unearthable somewhere. And spolier: he did. But not just any proof. No, the next day I was handed an UNBOUND, FIRST-PASS DOCUMENT. In one of those clear binder-things that you used for book reports in grade school. 8-1/2 by 11. Crappy paper. Pre-production. My hands shook when I touched it. Now for the hitch: Only a few days later, I was to be on my way to a friend's wedding in Portland. This is not just any friend, but a really important friend, one who has contributed hugely to my literary development, by introducing me to such luminaries as Julio Cortázar, Unica Zurn, and yes, now that you mention it, our dear Haruki Murakami. As is surely obvious by now, this friend received Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, in a spiral-bound MS Word document, months before publication, as a wedding present. (Small consolation: I read the whole thing on the plane ride to Oregon. It is spectacular.)
Satirical and full of stereotype, this novel is brilliant in its depiction of dismal, rural life. Lots of things made me chuckle, from Flora's description of her very worthy school where she was made to do a lot of sport when she spent most of the time running from the ball to her friends predilection with finding the perfect brassiere. Flora is a very precise heroine, a meddler, but in a no-nonsense kind of way which she decides is just what her oddball cousins at Cold Comfort need after learning she has 'rights'; Flora meets klettering cow-obsessed Adam, fecund Meriam, depressive aunt Judith, fey Elfine and a whole array of cousins who keep their marriages and lives secret from mad old Aunt Doom who saw something 'nasty in the woodshed' when she was little and as a result keeps tight tabs on the family. Flora sets about sorting out the lives of these delightfully eccentric characters, deciding for herself what needs to be done, whether it is marrying them off or simply buying them a little mop..... Full of delightful description - and rather oddly, but it works - set in the future, this sharp and witty novel cannot fail to give a pleasurable read.
At times laugh out loud. At times, surprisingly heartbreaking.

This was my introduction to Marquez, read it when I was about 16 or 17. I bought this as a First Edition Hardback simply based on my English teacher dropping the name of the author in our class once. But I have never been happier with a purchase. Not his greatest work, but one of beauty and tragedy nonetheless. I love the descriptions of the decadence of Colonial South America, and the inner purity of the two lead characters juxtaposed against their physical failings and the horror of the convent. Nothing tops Marquez for me.
Just as funny and witty and the first one :)

Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Author: J.K. Rowling Series: Harry Potter #4 Rating: ★★★★★ Summary: Harry Potter is midway through his training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the International Quidditch Cup. He wants to find out about the mysterious event that’s supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn’t happened for a hundred years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he’s not normal - even by wizarding standards. And in his case, different can be deadly Review: I don’t think any review I could write of this book would do it justice. Even more amazing than I remember it and a real treat to re-read. I especially noticed and appreciated the genius foreshadowing in this one. *sigh* J.K. Rowling, you are my hero. Things I Loved: Everything. The Yule Ball, the tournament, the epic ending. Things I Hated: N/A for Harry Potter!
Dear god in heaven. It's every bit as horrifying as you've heard, though maybe for different reasons: Although the bits about meatpacking safety (or lack thereof) are particularly disturbing, what's worse to me is the literally boundless lack of conscience on the part of seemingly everyone in the industry, with a few bright exceptions (In-N-Out Burger, I'm looking at you!). Read it and shudder.
A by the numbers recitation of Hollywood stories that display greed, stupidity and narcissism.
