this is a very life-consuming book... you want to read it all in one sitting but it's pretty long and complicated, so you take breaks.. but then you keep wondering about it... and it's all you think about.. and the darkness inside your half open closet door begins to seem sinister.. you start looking at your bedroom ceiling and wondering if it's always been that high, if you'd notice whether it had extended or lowered an inch... i thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience, it was really good and scary.. kind of like 'The Ring' wa the first time i watched it in theatres... i wonder how this book would be on a second reading, but i'd rather not attempt it

The content is fascinating - a translation of the rules for the correct conduct for a warrior living in Japan in the late-seventeenth century. But the style of the translation was very America, and a bit too modern for the subject matter.
Fun read....have to have a little "chick reading". I always enjoy her books and characters.
Spontaneous prose, indeed. What better way to describe the words? What amazes and delights me is how, when I read this book again every year or two, how the novel DOES stay fresh. When I read it in high school for the first time, I saw only the romance of road travel, and the mystique of Dean. Now in my thirties, I see the beautiful bittersweetness of the novel, and the power of Sal as observer -- never quite able to shake his middle-class roots and desires amid all the bohemia. Definitely in my top 5 of all time.

Totally brilliant. Edward Lear is perhaps best known for his Owl and the Pussycat poem and like that, The Two Old Batchelors has great language strewn throughout it, which in this case, creates a very comic scene indeed. Starting out as a hunt for food and ending up as mountaineering accident at the hands of a digruntled Sage, this poem will appeal to children (and adults) who like a little bit of drama and mischief. The Two Old Batchelors is a great introduction to writing in rhyming couplets, a lesson in trigonometry, a cookery course and also an instruction on health and hygiene (the opening lines are 'Two old Bachelors were living in one house; One caught a Muffin, the other caught a Mouse.', goodness only knows what state the house was in, in order for the muffin to be walking around...). The beauty of this poem is that it can be read aloud to younger children and is sufficiently vivid it its language, in spite of it being rather avant garde at times, that the crazy world of the two batchelors is immediately brought to life. For older children, this poem begs to be put on as a full blown stage production. The poem is carved up into voices of the narrator and characters, there's obviously starring roles for the cheese, mouse and Sage too, a whole world of fun to be had making the costumes and scenery and the opportunity for the musical to add to the words with some brilliant sound effects. A perfect poem!

Enjoyable mystery, but not as cleverly written as the Sherlock Holmes stories. It is frustrating that the reader is not told about a lot of the investigation, making the solution impossible to guess. Nevertheless, the late 40s make an interesting setting and the characters are fun. I'd read more of them.

I couldn't finish this in audiobook form. I primarily listen to audiobooks while knitting. Short stories require a lot more concentration to follow the story. Stories were great -- some I had heard independently before. Probably would be better to read in hard copy form.
This delightful collection of three short stories is a must-read for the holiday season. Each story is a different twist on a familiar holiday movie. You’ll delight in the modern-day version of An American Carol by Jasmine Cresswell, Miracle on Bannock Street by Colleen Collins and It’s a Wonderful Night by Kathleen Long. An American Carol: Charles Brentwood has allowed himself to become the bitter old miser we so often see portrayed in The Christmas Carol. What’s different about this character is that he really is related to Charles Dickens, the writer of the original story. In the process of self-discovery, he realizes his mistakes of the past and allows Christmas to work its transforming power. Miracle on Bannock Street: Take one ambitious female private investigator, a court-appointed attorney, a wayward 11-year-old, a very confused Santa and you’ve got a miracle on Bannock Street. Stella is saddled with Bobby, who’s been in and out of the system and is about to get sent to a school of boys but it’s the holidays and the judge doesn’t want to send him there now. Turn around being fair play, Victor gets Santa to stay at his house. Taking a leap, blindly trusting, this group forms a magical Christmas tie. This was my favorite of the anthology because the little boy’s Christmas wish comes true. It’s a Wonderful Night: Meredith Downey had never planned to stay in Dodge, New Jersey. She’d left right after high school to become a doctor never to return again, leaving behind Matt Riley. That was, until her father died and left the town without a doctor. Her sister, Melody, is the one that left and traveled the world. But one wonderful, snowy night, Meredith and Matt got their wish and realized that things sometimes may not be what they seem. If you love to watch those black-and-white movies every year, then pop the corn, make a hot chocolate, take a front row seat and enjoy this book of holiday romances.
Good for Maya culture + game theory; sometimes difficult to fathom the oddball plot transitions.
