Sometimes a film adaptation makes the book an even more enjoyable experience, and that's the case for me and Master and Commander. This was also a good choice for an audio-book; the reader's accent was ideal. The relationship between Jack and Stephen is a joy in any form, and I grew to appreciate more and more the performances by Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany while listening to the book. O'Brian's intricate descriptions of everything continue to fascinate. Most of all this time, I noticed the depth of interpersonal interaction. I think a lot of people, myself included, are so distracted by electronic devices and visual media, and so accustomed to communicating through machines, we forget what it's like to be so in tune with subtle nuances of posture, expression, and vocal tone. What it must have been like to live in such close quarters, and so intimate with human bodies with their functions...it's both distasteful and oddly fascinating to think about, like watching the "Worst Jobs in History" series on the BBC. Now I'm inspired to make some more headway on Moby Dick. Damn you Ahab! I shall prevail and finish this white whale of a book in my lifetime; upon my word, I swear it will be done!

This in not my favorite Gloria Whelan, but I really enjoyed it. I just wish the other books were all combined into one. Now I have to find the sequels. Indians and British combine against the new Americans. The story takes place on an island between two of the Great Lakes. Not a lot of war, more about the people on the island.
3.5 stars that I am rounding up to 4 because this is a book that needed to be written. It's not perfect and I'll agree that it's preachy at times but I think this is one of the only YA books out there that gives teens a peek into the mind of a young Muslim girl that is trying to balance Australian (but it could easily be American) norms with those of her more traditional faith while living in a largely WASPy world. It's not easy and this is definitely an interesting read. I did get bored with some of the subplots (like Leila and her brother) but then I felt more interested in others (like Simone and Josh but that got boring after a while too). I thought it was interesting that Amal's parents were fairly forward thinking and I think it's a misconception that all immigrant parents and/or all Muslim parents are super conservative. A lot of immigrant parents actually pretty open-minded and it was refreshing that her parents were not like, for example, Leila's parents, because I think that kind of thinking is what perpetuates prejudice. I thought the book dealt pretty well and was honest about prejudices against Muslims, especially in a post-9/11 world. The author talked about 9/11 and the attacks in Bali and how they affected the narrator and those around her. I didn't think the reactions of the white characters were over-the-top at all. People like Tia were very racist and hateful (and people like that exist) but others were not. That's normal and we do live in a world where a lot of people are not comfortable with multiculturalism, especially when it involves Muslims. So I didn't think the white characters were caricatures at all. I did think Amal's narration could have been edited down a bit. 360 pages is a LOT of text and she got to be very wordy and whiney at times. Still, I think the author wrote something unique and one-of-a-kind but hopefully not for long. As the world continues to become more diverse I hope we continue to see books like this pop up. They are great in terms of being able to educate young readers about other cultures, they tackle prejudice and stereotypes, and they get young people to rethink some of their ideas about the world.

I picked this one up because I'm starting grad school classes again tomorrow and I wanted something rather mindless to read for the weekend prior to school. This one turned out to be better than I thought it would be. I started out not liking the main character, Cindy Bixby, too much. She seemed too clueless to be believable initially, but by the end of the book my opinion of her had changed. After having grown up on college campuses (my father was a professor), it's pretty safe to say I'm not much of a fan of Greek systems in general, so I enjoyed reading a book that poked fun of them a bit.
I really enjoyed this book. The first time around my teacher read this book to my 4th grade class. When I saw the book again I recalled the funny, physical pieces and remembered how much my teacher loved this book. So I read it again and now take the inspiring emotion pieces. However the writing is, however fictional parts of this may be, the most important thing to take away is the message of love. I think that's really the whole point.

I learned more about theology and religious factions (Knights Templar) in a fun way. Also that a novel can present documented information AND information not necessarily accepted as truth in one story. A fine read when taken as a fictional account. The story is always the most important reason I'm reading fiction; this one taught me to remember to watch for what's real and what IS fiction when the gears are being shifted as smoothly as they were here.
A well done combination of self-help and new age philosophy.

I hated myself for agreeing with some of Rand's points, and grew frustrated with the characters and the obvious flaws in the philosophy presented, but couldn't stop reading it.
