I know it ruins my feminist street cred to say that I love this book, but the prose in Rabbit, Run is delicious. The fact that I found myself empathizing with the repugnant Rabbit might be a sign of my Uncle Tom nature or it could be the result of the mastery of Updike's characterization. Any hesitation I felt towards this novel dissolved when I read (or watched, I can't remember) an interview with Updike wherein he explained that he wrote R,R in response to "On the Road," as a way of showing that the fantasy of running away and living a bohemian lifestyle did not apply to the small-town working and middle classes with which he was so familiar. I have read the whole Rabbit series and even though I loved them all, none of them touch this first book. I suspect it's the high water mark of Updike's entire career, actually. So, respectfully: eat a dick, feminists.

Easy to read and well written. It's an author writing about their life as an author. I got frustrated with some of the charecters, but that is becuase I thought they were believable. It was good, not my favorite, but good.

This was such a sweet little book. I really enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish. Peter was funny, Heidi was charming. Grandfather, Alm-Uncle was mysterious, Clara was delightful and as were the remainder of the characters. I felt that the messages of faith and trust in Gods all knowing power was wonderful. The amiable character in Heidi of being genuine and caring and selfless was wonderful and all in all I thought the book a classic!
