A haunting book about impulsive choices, taking the easy way out, and then how whole lives play out because of those 10 minutes/24 hours. The book was particularly haunting because of the powerless ness of many of the characters to know why things are the way they are, much less have an impact and change them. The characters stay with you for a long time--this is one of those books that is good when you read it and stays good for a long time after as you find yourself thinking about it.

I am not a fan of Rand's philosophy, but I think her books are interesting. I enjoyed The Fountainhead much more. It had much shorter philosophical monologues and a more interesting plot.
Very easy to ready and full of magical realism.
I read the first chapter of Open House while waiting on a stool at the Strand sometime around.... April or May. Now we are finally reunited thanks to my access to more libraries and more inter-library-loaning networks. Ah-hah!
I have a fixation with the years leading up to WWI. The idealism of the pre-war years reminds me of the late 1960s - the progressives honestly believed that they were going to change the world - not in decades, but NOW! They believed in equality for all, but were engulfed by a larger desire for nationalism, racial hate, and grand leaders. The War ended all a certain type of idealism, and that type of decentralized, leaderless idealism went underground until the 60s. This book has all of that AND it's written beautifully. There are beautiful passages about the decadence of the ruling classes, and their obsession with an outdated masculinity. Best is the story of Franz Ferdinand. I knew he was an aggressive dick, but I didn't know why. This book makes him out to be a tragic Cassandra. He correctly foresaw that war with Serbia would start a World War, and would mean the death of the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Austrio-Hungarian Empire. He was a peace-nik and hated Austrian society because Austrian society hated his lower-born wife, and the Austrian court snubbed her at every opportunity. The lead up to his death at machinations of The Black Hand is a nail-biting action sequence. Even though we all know how it ends, the way we get to Ferdinand's assassination is exciting and incredible. There's much more here. Nearly everything in this book is vital, and there's nearly no fat.

J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts' pseudonym for the "____ in Death" series, one of my favorite book series. I thought I'd check out some of her earlier work, writting under her own name. I picked up this book because it contained three short novels, so I thought it would be the quickest read. In hindsight, this probably wasn't the best idea, since the short novels in the "_____ in Death" series are radically different from the full length novels. In any case, I decided that I don't enjoy the romance genre. These stories all have the same plot: Woman meets man. Woman doesn't like man. Man kisses woman. Woman sleeps with man. The end. Nora Roberts has a wonderful skill for describing a scene, and she places the characters in beautiful locations. Unfortunately these books are mindless. I think I use more brainpower watching TV...

I was expecting more from this book given how many people loved it. I was waiting for a major storyline twist that never happened.
I gave this book 70 pages and then set it aside. I never do this! Typically, I will stubbornly slog my way through most anything. But after 70 pages I didn't know what was going on, didn't know who the people were, and didn't know what I should think about them. Also, Shirley, for the love of all things holy, copious amounts of sentence fragments are frustrating to read; direct objects are always a good thing; and no one (NO ONE!) engages in dialogue like that--if we did, none of us would know what the hell we were talking about.

** spoiler alert ** Again I would give this book 1.5 stars. There really was not much excitement in this book. I felt that this book could have jus been a chapter or two in another book. There was alot of talking going on between the characters but no issues were resolved, in fact more issues were created with the kidnap of Yvonna's daughter, Bilal Jr who is now in the picture as a teenager, and the deaths of Penny & Gabriella. This book was a mess. It was all over the place & did not tie up loose ends. Even if there is the promise of a book 5, this book could hv been a little more consistent on character development. I'm ready to jus find out who is responsible for what & if people are really who they say they are in these books.

** spoiler alert ** Eh. I suppose I thought it would be different somehow from the other personal-relationship-tragedy-though-travel-turns-into-epiphany-moment-memoir, a la Eat, Pray, Love. It was not any different, except maybe some part of the outcome. I imagine she's relieved that she actually got something bigger than an article published, albeit not a novel. I'm sure that will come next, as money tends to attract money. I'm glad she didn't get divorced. Not enough people, I think, fight for their relationships anymore. I didn't. I couldn't. I ought not have. That's ok too.
