4 Stars 9/10 Jasper Fforde is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love the Thursday Next series (and the wonderful "Shades of Grey"). It is intelligent writing, and the more you've read the more of the elements of the books you catch (granted I am not incredibly well read and many references escape me). Why I read it: To continue the Thursday Next series. Would recommend to: Anyone who has read the previous two books, anyone who has read a lot of other "classic" (specifically classic English and American authors) or anyone who enjoys comedy/mystery/love stories.

WOW! FINALLY! Now this is what I have been waiting for!! Romance Shomance - who cares??!! THIS was the installment the series needed. Phew! I felt like with this book Ward finally broke free of the unoriginal, trite & tiresome formula which publisher's give "romance" author's to follow. And once Ward got her hooks in her audience, developed a large & loyal readership - she had come to the point in the series where she could finally write the story as intended. Thank God. I cannot believe the difference in this book in comparison to the 1st three. It's like Night & Day! Clearly, Ward spent enough time honing her skills & went for the juglar in this. In this book - the secondary characters soar. Rehvenge, John Matthew, Qhuinn, Blay, Xhex, Lash Cormia even...they were incredibly interesting, compelling, rich & captured my heart in so many ways. I love when author's start to develop rich stories & flesh out (seemingly intended) minor characters. And what about the new ones? Lassiter? I can't wait to know him! And Payne? A female version of Vishous? This should be good. There was so much to love here but what I absolutely appreciated & loved most about this book was the developing friendship between John Matthew, Qhuinn & Blay. Wow. SPOILERS BELOW: Ward touched upon homosexuality in Books 4 & 5 & I thought she handled it well for the most part. The message being really - love is love & it doesn't matter what sex, it is about "seeing" the other person & feeling that soul connection. With Vishous & Butch I felt it was a little too neatly rectified but I respected the intent & they way she navigated the story to show the type of (rare) bond of friendship which transcend. Normally, that is reserved for Female characters & books & for Ward to flip the script & write a relationship like this between 2 warrior alpha males was really brave. In this book, she tackles the subject again & fleshes it out even further. I feel like she handled it with such grace & dignity. The moments of understanding between Blay, John & Qhuinn were tender & honest in their mutual vulnerability & respect. Blay's love for Qhuinn, Qhuinn's honesty about his sexuality in return & John's rape by another man exposed. You would think that in this butch world Ward created, the last thing she would do is go there, but she did & not just once but twice! Not only that, but instead of having a woman suffer sexual abuse & violation - it has been the men in the books who have experienced & been scarred by that special humiliation (Z, John, V, Rehvenge). She also has male virgins (the 3 boys were all virgin's, Phury, V was emotionally). I can't tell you how happy I am the the roles have been reversed in regards to this subject matter. And I think Ward has done a fantastic job at bringing theses themes into the series & integrating them pretty beautifully. I really hope she continues to push these characters & continue in this vein. B'c most of all, it was a great, GREAT example of storytelling & kept me riveted. I have to admit - going by the 1st few books, I didn't think Ward had it in her. I was dead wrong.

Interesting read. Not as great as Water for Elephants, but the apes were fascinating! Besides, how often can someone tell a tale as wonderful as Water for Elephants??? I'll be looking for her next work.

A light, entertaining read, with none of the 'knock your socks off' discoveries of its predecessor. Really? Prostitutes make a lot of money in crappy conditions, and high-class independent call girls make a BUTT TON of money in really easy conditions? Nawwwww surely you jest. In fairness, a lot of things that would have surprised me more, had I read this four or so years ago when I first read Freakonomics, I've since (thanks to Freakonomics) read enough in similar areas that it does NOT surprise me. There are simple cheap (untested in real life) solutions to large scale world problems? A lot of 'green' technology is actually pretty lousy? Monkeys can be trained to use currency? Of course they can, why would you doubt monkeys. (Or put your faith in a Prius.) Anyway, fast read with some fun knowledge to read aloud to a patient bystander. Not earthshaking, not especially memorable.

This started out with a really interesting premise, but some of the essays were kind of cool and interesting, and some just wandered without coming to much of a conclusion. A lot of the creative writing bogged down instead of enhancing the text.

This was a great book... until the second half. The change of pace was a bit abrupt, but you understand why at the end... the author's trying to make the story come full circle, but I still couldn't help feeling put-off.

3.5 stars. At times intriguing, at others confusing, it was an interesting read. It interwove a human love story with an animal love story, although I had a hard time seeing the animal's love story being as deep as the human's, even though I love animals. It had an interesting writing style, and made me think, although there were times I wanted more from the book. All around, an interesting read.

Great, informative story. Loved learning all the terrible and stomach turning ways the jungle can kill. And the story of Fawcett and Z are both intriguing. Would've been better if written more like a story instead of a piece of researched journalism, but what can I expect from a journalist? I found myself loving the parts taken from Fawcett's letters and accounts, but a little bored with the story of the authors own quest for info. It was an easy/fast read nonetheless. And now I want to learn more about Z. It will be interesting to see what Brad Pitt does with the movie.
Fun times? Yes. Fun times.

This book took off like a 757 for me. I was enthralled and inspired with what Gretchen was doing. I guess I should also add envious of her ability and available funding to do such a project. I really related to the first half of the book and was happily soaking up every work with fascination and a feeling of being able to identify with much of what she said. The second half of the book became slow and dragged a little for me. I gave this book four start because I loved much of it and liked the rest, I liked her writing style and thought the addition of reader blog blurbs was fun and creative. A lot of people have compared this book to Eat Pray Love and I just have to say that I don't find that really accurate. I can't explain why, it just isn't!...lol
