Duma Key was a creepy, compelling Stephen King read! Edgar Freemantle is trying to recover from a tragic construction accident. This self-made millionaire was nearly crushed to death by a crane but a stroke of luck and a talented doctor saved his life. Recovery is not as easy as survival though. With his life rapidly collapsing around him, Edgar decides to get away from it all and relocates to Duma Key, Florida. The house on Duma Key that he has rented is waiting for him. "Big Pink" is everything Edgar was looking for and he begins transforming his life with walks on the beach to stregthen his legs and some simple sketching to heal his mind. Quickly the sketching turns to painting and Edgar's hidden talent is brought to the surface. His paintings are eerily beautiful and frightening at the same time. Only Edgar knows his secret, they are painted with his phantom right arm. As Edgar sits on the precipice of fame and insanity, he searches for an explanation to his condition and what he finds horrifies him far more than anything he has faced before. Duma Key was Stephen King at his finest! This novel had a softer creepier edge than some of King's other work but I adored this difference. The horror was quietly expanded rather than displayed with shocking clarity. The mystery in this book was thought-provoking and one of King's most well-written. I was immediately drawn in with the prologue and the tension built with each page I turned. The beginning of the book did seem a bit wordy at times but that is part of the charm of King. His descriptions draw you into his world with startling clarity and the slow evolution of his characters is breath-taking. Edgar Freemantle was a fantastic lead character! I didn't care for him at first but as the story developed I thought he evolved beautifully into a man who drew empathy. I hated his ex-wife Pam, thought his apathetic daughter Melinda was a tedious character and wasn't found of his beloved daughter Ilse either. I will admit that I thought Ilse was very childlike but that was perfect for her role in Duma. These family members and their interaction with Edgar drew me to him like a magnet. As for the Duma cast, Jack Cantori was a winner and I enjoyed that he played an integral role in the story at the end. Wireman was a perfect King character and I was entranced by him from the moment he was seen on the beach. His mysterious appearance and uncertain role in the story deepened the suspense at every turn. I was saddened to read of his later demise. Finally, Elizabeth was wonderful! She was an ideal mix of a woman haunted by her past and her present. The small insights into her past sparked my curiosity and when her secrets were finally revealed, her strength was incomparable. Each moment of hers in the story was captivating! Overall, Duma Key was a thrilling read from the very first page and I think it was reflective of the Stephen King that avid fans know and love. It places high on my list of favorite King novels and I would recommend it to my fellow mystery and horror afficionados!
