Wow!! This was one of those books that will stick with me for a while. It's a fictional account of what could have happened if President Grant gave into the Cheyenne Indian's request for 1,000 white brides. Very well written!

"That's pulp!" It's a claim heard more than once in this impressive, but uneven meta-version of mid-20th Century adventure stories. H.P. Lovecraft, zombies, communists, death gods, and a pre-Scientology L. Ron Hubbard all make an appearance. And yet the book doesn't really get going until the halfway point. That's an awfully long time to wait for a cliffhanger. Recommended for fans of the genre.

Great book full of unpredictable action. Long, but easy to get into. There are very few characters in here that you don't indentify with on some level-so characters you thought were bad-well, you just don't know-right and wrong is not so easy to determine.

A great book about the "working poor" in America. Ehrenreich essentially spent a year working various minimum wage jobs & trying to survive on just that salary. Its an informative & sobering look into the difficult lives of so many Americans. And it becomes even more sobering when you realize how easy it was for her - a well-spoken, well-groomed white woman with cultural savvy - to get & keep these minimum wage jobs. Unfortunately for those who DO want these jobs, its not as easy for them to get them as it was for her. Anyone who believes the lie that the poor are just lazy & need to work harder will get a real eye-opener in reading this book & seeing just how damn hard these people work & yet still remain poor.

Absolutely phenomenal...Hosseini gets deep into his character's psyche. There's a certain rawness in the way he depicts the human character, I reccomend this to anyone.

I was completely taken by this book...until the unnecessary fluff ending
Pretty good young adult novel written from the point of view of a young man who is also an adopted African-Canadian. Disgruntled because he has been relocated from the big city to rural Ontario life with his parents, he reconnects with both his parents, gets his academic career back on track AND rediscovers his roots while undertaking independent research on some historical objects unearthed while gardening in his new backyard. Quite contrived but very informative about the origins of slavery and the evolution from African-American slave to freed men and women. Canadian language arts curriculum.

Won't be reading the rest of the trilogy, that's for sure.
Am I the only person who doesn't like Kurt Vonnegut Jr.?
