Loved this book. I bought it second hand, and the pages have fallen apart on me from over use. I'll have to find a new one now.

I really wanted to like this book but it made me want to scratch my skin off. You know that dirty feeling you get from some books and movies? It has nothing to do with how sad or depressing the narrative is. It's something else, deeper and sicker.

While it was difficult to completely relate to the protaganist, seeing as how she is a baby boomer and I'm the child of boomers, I did find her miscellaneous house-staging (and even "food-staging") tips to be interesting/enjoyable/helpful. Definitely a good read for those interested in this genre who constantly flip between HGTV and the Food Network channels on sleepless nights.

Not an unpleasant read, but not very satisfying either.

Like Rant and Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk is continuing his exploration of the themes that 1) modern man has had so many of life's challenges removed from everyday life that pursuit of pleasure to the point of addicition and self destruction is a logical outcome 2) that without real challenges in life, addiction serves the purpose of choking off all feelings except those of the pleasure and pain centers and 3) that human interaction is either random and accidental or co-dependent. The title comes from the main character's practice of choking in restaurants until a "hero" comes along to save him. This is, of course, a selfless act meant to give meaning to the life of the hero. It also serves as the trigger for a never ending stream of birthday cards and checks and a growing cirlce of relations. If you liked Fight Club, you'll like Choke, but beware - sex is not a thing of beauty in Choke.

A beautiful story of a group of teens who, through tragedy, try to find the answer to the question, "How will we ever get through this labyrinth of suffering?" This book also reminds us of the power (and necessity) of believing in the Great Perhaps. Alaska, Miles (Pudge), and the Colonel, along with the other vividly depicted characters in this novel, capture the teen experience in a thoughtful and subtle way. I will probably give my future children this book to read in the hopes that they will think before making potentially life-altering decisions.
"Sunshine" by Richelle Mead: (4) It's a really nice short story, it helped bump the Vampire Academy books on my TBR list! "Bring Me to Life" by Alyson Noël: (1) First there's a moment where I mentally struggle to remember what this one was about... and when I do I wish I hadn't. The first chapters drag too much, until the final one dumps a plot which wasn't original or well constructed. "Above" by Kristin Cast: (2) I'm on the fence about the writing style of this one - it's different from what we're used too, but I'm girl who likes long luxurious descriptions of both action and scenery, so this feels strange to read. And the plot is also... strange. "Hunting Kat" by Kelley Armstrong: (4) Now here's another really good short story, the characters are well depicted, there's the right amount of action... I loved every moment of it and I'm looking forward reading more books by this author. "Lilith" by Francesca Lia Block: (3) Darker than the previous stories, I'm not sure if it fits with them, I'd like to see more of the couple together or a bridge to a possible continuation story.
