After about a year I thought it would be good to get back to the Yada-Yada series and I am glad I did. There are some "unbelievables" in this story, but maybe that just shows the poverty of my faith. The description of the Seder is something I am printing out for future reference. One of the themes is "look for the possibilities," a great help in my present state of thinking.
My favorite book as a kid. I still re-read it every few years. The Christmas tree scene is my favorite!
I found this a lot more useful than her late Mao book as it is a lot less vitrolic and exposes the positive as well as negative side of the revolution.

I own the large print edition. Have no idea why. I've owned this book a long time, and haven't read it yet -- I'm a little leery that it can be in the same realm of book as the Rebecca is follows after. But I'll re-read Rebecca, then read this, and make the final call then!
This is a beautiful novel. I had a difficult time putting it down. I found myself invested in the character of Amir to the point of crying - yes, crying - with him. I highly recommend this novel. I look forward to seeing the movie.

Okay... really I've only read two of the inclusions in this book: In Dubious battle, which I give 3 stars to cause it's just not Steinbeck's best and Of Mice and Men which I loved as a kid so lets say 4 stars.
A short, but well-told story of Deborah, the Hebrew slave who rose from deplorable conditions to lead an army of her people to defeat Sisera at Mount Tabor. Suspenseful and exciting, it caught my interest immediately and held to the end. Deborah is a worthy heroine, and I really enjoyed the descriptive details of Hebrew and Canaanite daily life. Sweet love story, too.

Bizarre, somewhat disturbing book.
"Others said, and still say, they could never have done what she eventually did. Theirs became quite a story, a story still told." I was intrigued from the beginning. The Maytrees is a story of a couple, Toby and Lou; a story of love and living simply; a story of heartache and questioning life; and a story of family and redemption. The words are fresh and Dillard's descriptions are beautiful.
