Sanjay Mangale sanjaypenta3d8 — Excellent story. The Coen brothers movie follows the book very closely. What is lacking from the movie is an even deeper picture of the woman that Mattie Ross has become as she recounts her story of revenge on her father's killer. As admirable as she appears at 14, with her intelligence, morals and drive, if one looks a little more closely, one can see how cold and hard Mattie is, at least as the narrator. Is her reflection of her younger self accurate? Could she truly have been so untouched by the her circumstances at that age? Mattie is a woman whose story is engrossing, but not one to know. Portis' description of place and time are extremely well-done. A little knowledge of the history encountered makes one more appreciative of who these people are.

Dan Bejar dabejarbed4 — Frickin' awesome book. Based on folklore more than anything, it's an historical fiction explaining the "rumor" that there was a female Pope. I enjoyed the character development. What a dreadful time in history to be a female.

Silvio Cruz silviocruz — Books tend to spark mini-obsessions with me, so I have to be careful reading them, from time to time. Well, most anything sparks mini-obsessions with me, so a book is as good a thing as any. "Word Freak" got me playing Scrabble, which I'd never done before in my life. It also convinced me very quickly that I would never be a championship Scrabble player, so I didn't have to worry about this obession becoming anything serious. Fastis's account of the depths to which Scrabble players go to become the best is illuminating, and the characters who float through the book are quirky, entertaining, and, occasionally, more than a little pitiful. It's not as good a book about games as "Positively 5th Street,' but "P.5.S." is about Hold'em poker, a much more intrinsically interesting game to me. I'd recommend both of them, if you have any interest in the games they're based on.
