Kevin Haselton _ptic_roupkdh — Labyrinth was, much to my chagrin, just "ok." It wasn't bad at all, but disappointingly not-stellar. This review may be because I had enhanced expectations for this novel - I bought it while I was in London two summers ago, and never got around to it, being busy with classes. It's got everything I love in a book - a strong female lead, France, a little bit of magic, a lot of history. The list goes on. So I've waited patiently until I had time to properly enjoy it and found the book...wanting. The great things about this book: The history is magnificently researched and artfully reanimated. The reader, reading about the Cors d'Honneur can imagine being in the very spot the character stands. The story is also well thought-out with no loop holes or loose ends. My problem with this book: There was just something...off about it. The author managed to develop the character's histories and personalities, but without any true emotion. You feel vaguely attached to the good characters and vaguely detestful of the bad, but the novel never takes a real grip on it's reader. The interactions between the characters always feels forced. As artfully as the author is able to describe the nuanced facial expressions in the conversations, the feelings all come across as blunt, with little depth. I've thought about this a bit and can't really figure out how I would fix it. The story is all there, and it's a good story, but the inter-character relations have little spice. A final criticism would be that though the attempts to make the mystery complex and interesting were well-meant, the author frequently errs both on the side of "mysterious-to-the-point-of-being-difficult-to-follow" and the opposite side of "how-is-the-character-not-getting-this." All that being said, it's a well thought-out novel worthy of a read...but probably not a second.

_manda_iuffre
Amanda Giuffre _manda_iuffre — At first I was stalled by the present tense narrative... it is so unusual in fiction that I needed to adjust. But this book is one of the rare kinds that seems to have just flowed from the pen with little effort. Nothing seems forced, the narrative unfolds as it seems it should, and the writing is unostentatious (see my review of The Emperor's Children), almost simple. I particularly love the central tension, that of Gogol rejecting his name and his heritage, and the idea that we all inevitably return to our roots at some point (a notion that terrifies me ). Most books, even some good ones, take effort to read. The degree of effort is a good indicator to me of how well a book is written, and every now and then you come across a book that is so well rendered that it feels like the book is reading you. The Namesake was one of those for me.

Hoya Harit hoyaharit764e — Narrated by Christina Traister - Narration 3*s - She gets the attitude / emotion right so that part's good. But the slow delivery pace made the book semi-boring to listen to. The slower delivery compared to the much faster pace in my head when I read it myself was detrimental to the audio version of the story. I enjoyed listening anyway, because I'm a Garwood fan and I'd already read the book and knew where it was going. Julie Garwood is a comfort read / listen (with a good narrator) and a decent story. I consider this one in the decent category, making it three in a row that were good enough reads /listens to fall into the "comfort" aspect. Predictable but enjoyable.

Carlos Ordaz _arlos_rdaz — Fortunately, I wasn't forced to read this book in a high school classroom. If I had, taking quizzes on it and writing reflections probably would have absolutely killed it for me. I read it when I was 19 and I needed it. I had (and still very much have) a crush on Holden Caulfield. I've re-read it 4 or 5 times now, and I don't re-read too often. I feel that there are too many books that I need to read before I die, so that says a lot about this one.

Natalya Zemskova natashazem3325 — Thank you, India. Interesting read. Slow read. Not a particularly compelling read. I thought the parts discussing the various nationalistic campaigns launched by Gandhi and Nehru were particularly interesting but it often dragged on talking about various volumes of history composed by Indian authors that tried to put medical and sanitation initiatives into a historical context. I mean, really? Not light reading. Interesting but dense. And honestly a bit over my humble head.

lucminarro
Luc Minarro lucminarro — I am not finishing this book. Now that I have switched English classes, I do not plan on reading this again. As you an see, my feelings for this book have not changed. Everyone says how they admire Thérése so much. I just don't get it. She is extremely full of herself, and she is always crying at every little thing. She seems really spoiled, and it drives me crazy. Even when she says that she "did it for Jesus" she is still obsessed with herself. I just don't know what people like about her. Ok. I do not like this book. Yet, I must read it. I continue to try and like it, but it is just not happening. I have to admit that reading the introduction (the first edition introduction) out loud is a little bit fun, but I am not really liking this book. I am reading this book for my English class, just my friend Madi and I. I have to say that I like how she used her mother's letters, it makes it sound less like bragging. And all of the details that she remembers are quite fascinating. All of the books that I have read this year for English have been true/based off a true story, which I find slightly intriguing. I would really love it if someone could actually convince me that this is an amazing book.

ryznar
Vit Ryznar ryznar — I love these compendiums of short stories - it's an excellent opportunity to be exposed to writers that you otherwise would not have heard of. Pick any genre you like - I like mystery and travel - and take down little bite size pieces of reading. The travel stories, especially, can be little epics of adventure of which you can tackle several in the course of a quiet evening. I picked this one up because Tim Cahill, the editor, is one of my favorite travel writers. Previous installments have ended up being ecological morality tales and rather depressing; Cahill injects some much needed humor with his selections. Although it must be said that the breezy treatment - most of the articles are pulled from magazines like GQ or The New Yorker, so that you might get the same experience by just reading those magazines. All in all - a lot of fun.
