Aluisio Cervelle cervellesantos — I would have given this book more stars if not for the fact that the author recommends a couple of plants that have taken over and ruined my garden. It has been a LOT of work trying to remove them and they are still not gone. Terrible advice under any circumstance.

Kareem Shokry kareem_shofccd — This is a book that needs to be read very carefully. When I first picked it up in the bookstore and even read the prologue, I believed it to be a history of Mormon politics and theology. While Krakauer does tell the events of the development of this American religion, he focuses more on the extremist Fundamentalist Mormons, a distinction that can be easy to miss or misstate if one is not careful. Being religious but not Mormon, I found Krakauer's tone to be one of continued scorn for all religion of any kind, and I thought he could have just as easily conveyed his point and story with less of his own opinions and emotions woven into the chapters. I somehow doubt that unreligious readers would have noticed this as much, though. History has always been my least favorite subject, but this book kept my attention on nearly every page, and I had the distinct feeling of being smarter having finished it, as I learned a great deal of historical facts, names, and dates that are never covered in public school. Krakauer touched on the interesting debate of whether or not it is a valid defense to claim that your religion forced you to break the law. I appreciated that he did not try to solve the argument, but presented the difficulities associated with the continuing issue in legal courts.

Sarah Jane sjmaki — The premise of this book is that a married 20-something in NYC decides to cook her way through Julia Child's classic cooking tome during a one year period. She has no previous cooking experience and inhabits a tiny apartment with what sounds like an appalling kitchen. As one might imagine, there are tantrums, failed foods, and lots of drinking-in-despair. It's a fun read. I particularly enjoyed her chapter about the difficulties of cooking lobsters (in one recipe, the lobster is supposed to be eviscerated while still alive, which is not for the faint of heart, evidently). The friend who loaned me this book commented that she really enjoyed it, but that she didn't know if the author had another book in her. I tend to agree with that statement.

Wahi Ahmed wa7i — Another good yet sad story.

Peter Witham peterwitham — Abedelrazek examines the writing of Leila Ahmed, Mohja Kahf, Laila Halaby, and Diana Abu-Jaber to examine the hybridinated identities she sees in each text. The characters in these texts negotiate among multiple cultures and multiple identities. The characters in these books resist essentializing identity politics by rejecting the notions of roots in favor of diaspora. The characters have a “rearticulated politics of difference” - a celebration of difference that breaks down the boundary between self and other. I particularly enjoyed her discussion of Kahf’s Emails from Scheherazad and Abu-Jaber’s Crescent but that is because those were the texts I was most familiar with. In discussing Crescent , Abedelrazek asserts that each character experiences a different kind of exile, including Nathan and Sirine. She suggests Sirine is in exile from herself. Although I greatly appreciated the readings of Hanif’s experience of exile and the role of the uncle’s tales, I was skeptical about reading Sirine’s experience through the lens of the exile rather than as an Arab American experience or second generation immigrant experience. I preferred the discussion Abedelrazek opens where Sirine’s Arab American identity suggests a sort of American home for the exiled characters and yet Sirine lacks a feeling of home struggling to find peace with and agency within her own hyphenated identity.
