Abedelrazek examines the writing of Leila Ahmed, Mohja Kahf, Laila Halaby, and Diana Abu-Jaber to examine the hybridinated identities she sees in each text. The characters in these texts negotiate among multiple cultures and multiple identities. The characters in these books resist essentializing identity politics by rejecting the notions of roots in favor of diaspora. The characters have a “rearticulated politics of difference” - a celebration of difference that breaks down the boundary between self and other. I particularly enjoyed her discussion of Kahf’s Emails from Scheherazad and Abu-Jaber’s Crescent but that is because those were the texts I was most familiar with. In discussing Crescent , Abedelrazek asserts that each character experiences a different kind of exile, including Nathan and Sirine. She suggests Sirine is in exile from herself. Although I greatly appreciated the readings of Hanif’s experience of exile and the role of the uncle’s tales, I was skeptical about reading Sirine’s experience through the lens of the exile rather than as an Arab American experience or second generation immigrant experience. I preferred the discussion Abedelrazek opens where Sirine’s Arab American identity suggests a sort of American home for the exiled characters and yet Sirine lacks a feeling of home struggling to find peace with and agency within her own hyphenated identity.

I thought that the plot would be interesting now that we're talking about post-apocalypse. Oh how I was wrong. I couldn't bring myself to read this. I shake my head at the stupidity of these aliens. Well DUH, do you think the entire human population will just let you take over their bodies? I certainly won't allow that. I felt like nothing change, despite many comments from outside sources that her writing style improved. Well, maybe she needs to work a bit more on her logic, yes? Her romance is also lacking. It appears that her characters automatically knows that person is 'the one'. Very much like Edward and Bella.

I tried to read this, as it has been lauded as one of the best pieces of feminist fiction from our mother's generation. I can't get into it, struggled with what I did read, and haven't finished it! I keep it around though, determined to someday give it another chance - I just have way too many other promising books to read ahead of it!
