Namio Kudo namiokudo — A fawning pro-war book that is hugely unconvincing, utilizing wordplay as leverage instead of facts; its labyrinthine attention to details in attempt to add color comes at the expense of focus and clarity, quickly wearing out patience, this is especially worrisome when you already know that the people he casts in the most sentimental and positive of garbs haven't really fulfilled any accomplishments to make them worthy of such lofty descriptions. Saddam's vestiges are seen everywhere to constantly reminds us that we're better off, even as we descend deeper and deeper into the abyss.

Pp Camus ppcamus — I first became interested in reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini after reading The Kite Runner last year. So, when my sister checked it out from the library I was very eager to see what it was all about. Words can't describe my reaction the the novel. Simply put, it was amazing.... A Thousand Splendid Suns is a fictional novel that takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan. The main characters, Mariam and Laila, are both wives of the a shoemaker named Rasheed, the antagonist of the novel. The novel tells the tale of both women, how they ended up in the terrible positions of becoming wives of a terrible, abusive man. The novel moves between the stories of each lady, starting with Mariam and then continuing to the story of Laila. Mariam grew up as a poor girl in a village, the illegitimate child of a wealthy. When her mother dies she goes to live with her father, however, she is forced into marriage. Laila grew up in a more privileged life, but still had many challenges to face. She lost both of her brothers to the war against the USSR, and her mother was thrown into a deep depression. As she grew older she developed a very close relationship with her friend Tariq, but as fate would have it they are brutally thrown apart. Desperate, and faced with no other questions, Laila agrees to become Rasheed's second wife. The rest of the novel travels through the life of both wives with their terribly abusive husband, and the hope and strength they find in each other and their children. Both Laila and Mariam's greatest challenge is living with their husband, Rasheed. This problem manifests itself in several Man (or in this case, woman) vs. man conflicts. As well as this, there is also a great deal of conflicts between the protagonists and society (man vs. society). They are forced to live under a rule which gives no voice to women, and completely subjugates them to oppression and hardships. These conflicts give way to quite a few themes, my personal favorite being the theme that perseverance is the key to survival in any situation, no matter how bad it is. Mariam and Laila continue to persevere and survive all the hardships of life, even though they have little to live for. The constant dedication of both girls definitely had me rethinking the amount of commitment I put into things. Like themes, there are also quite a few symbols in the novel. First, and foremost, would be Rasheed. He symbolizes completely the harsh, traditional role of a man in eastern countries like Afghanistan. More importantly than the use of symbols, I believe, is Khaled Hosseini's ability to make a book come to life. To be honest, when I first read A Thousand Splendid Suns I thought it was a true story. Khaled Hosseini makes the smallest details seem important, without overdoing it. "Though there had been moments of beauty in it, Mariam knew that life for the most part had been unkind to her. But as she walked the final twenty paces, she could not help but wish for more of it. … One last time, Mariam did as she was told" [Hosseini 329:]. I love the way he can convey his analysis of ideas so thoroughly that I never have trouble understanding what he is trying to say. I've never see any other author do that as well as Khaled Hosseini does. Like I said before, it's extremely difficult for me to describe how much I appreciated and loved this book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to a read a story that will shake them to the core, and leave them feeling like they've gained something. And though I don't feel like it's up to me to say so, I would say that A Thousand Splendid Suns is much more interesting than The Kite Runner, though both are still wonderful novels.

Zhu Jing jean1579974 — Chloe Saunders is as normal as a teenager can get. But when a sudden freak incident happens at school, Chloe is put away in Lyle House, a group home for troubled teens. It doesn't take long for Chloe to realize that there's something weird about the house and the teens; something that is also connected to her ability. I am swept away in the excitement of first-book-in-the-trilogy. At first glance, the premise seems kind of familiar- girl goes through a freak, unexplainable incident, ends up in a place for crazy teens, and then possibly a long winded mystery. But thankfully, it exceeded my expectations. Chloe was an AWESOME female protagonist, she's smart, has aspirations, and there is thoughtful even as she narrates. The other teen characters also make an impression and aren't just there to fill up space. The supernatural aspect of it is refreshing, and SCARY, but I love it. The great thing about this book is that it meticulously thought out. There is no "oh what a coincidence" plot line. The mystery was well paced and revealed just enough. Can't wait to see where the story goes!
