** spoiler alert ** Rampant is a really good book and it probably deserves a more thoughtful review than the one I'm going to give it. Bullet point time! Things I Loved About This Book: - First and foremost, I loved Astrid. I loved the way she THINKS about everything -- always wondering what this or that means, trying to figure it out. She is a skeptic by nature, but she also believes what she sees and experiences (though her background does help a lot). She embraces her special destiny, but ultimately finds a way to do it on her own terms. And all of her questioning and puzzling really does save the day - the hunters couldn't have trained without her. She's pretty awesome. - I also really liked Phil, too. And Cory. Basically, the characters who got any development were developed pretty well! - The way this book explored sexuality was pretty great. No one is shamed for wanting sex, or shamed for not wanting sex. In fact, one of my favorite little scenes was when all the girls were talking about being virgins. Phil's rape was also handled very well. - I may have missed the point of this book, but can I have a Bonegrinder? - There were real consequences in this book, real danger all the time. Everyone was always getting hurt, right from chapter one. Even as their powers grew, unicorn hunting stayed dangerous. - The unicorns themselves are quite intriguing, and frightening! - I really liked the character of Astrid's mom, for all the reasons I would dislike her if I really knew her; what a difficult woman. - Astrid and Giovanni's courtship -- well, the first half, before things got complicated -- was pretty great. Giovanni is a great love interest without being tooooo perfect. The scene where Astrid tries to sleep with him was awesome. The tension between them in that scene was so great. Their communication was great. It felt like a very honest, real exchange. Basically, I thought they were a great portrayal of a couple that could fall in love but hasn't yet, and I enjoyed it. - The action sequences were pretty good, and I liked that, for the most part, Astrid wasn't some super hero who outshines everyone all the time. On the Not So Great Side: - The opening scene was awesome, but as soon as it ended the beginning became quite rushed. It really wasn't until Phil showed up that I felt the book started to fall into its grove, pacing wise. - Some of the emotional beats were a little rushed (like, really, Lilith went from thinking her daughter was dead, to getting back to the airport in less than 12 hrs?). - I loved the build up of Astrid and Giovanni in the first half, including the fact that he was kind of a jerk sometimes (well, that one time over the phone, anyway). But post-secret revealing, I felt it didn't quite live up to its potential. It was still entertaining and enjoyable, but it lost some realism, maybe? They just said "I love you" way too fast, and I don't know how I feel about Astrid just forgiving Giovanni for his role in everything... especially without talking to Phil about it ever (on page, anyway). Their interactions were still great, but there was a dip in emotional integrity for me. - I really would have liked the explore Astrid and Lilith's relationship more. They are both such great characters, but it feels like the second Lilith gets on screen the author is rushing to get her off. I feel like there is so much more to explore. - I generally liked the side characters, but it took me a while to get everyone straight in such a large group! By the end, everyone had at least one quirk to distinguish them, but I do hope, as this is a series, that they all get their own personalities and motivations, soon. You can't deeply explore every side character, but sometimes I did feel they were cardboardish. Especially Zelda, Rosamound, and Dorcas - we barely got to interact with them at all. I had a lot of fun reading this! Good book (or should I say good read, lol).
