Afnan Shimizu _himizu_young — Last year my editor at Gramedia presented me with three choices for my next translation project, and after reading their synopses at Amazon, I chose this one. After two-three years returning to full-time translating, I've found that I prefer translating novels with a non-modern-American setting, especially fantasy and historical fiction. This one fits the bill. I never regretted my choice. Imperium was a joy to translate. I dove into the world of Ancient Rome Republic in the first century BC and got a chance to glimpse the famous figures populating it--Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and of course Cicero, the protagonist of the novel--and seeing them come alive from the pages. The story itself is told through the eyes of Tiro, Cicero's personal secretary and inventor of stenography. It captures Cicero's personal and public life, and his struggle to attain imperium--the ultimate power in Rome--without the help of ancestry, army, or wealth; only armed with his wit and oratorical skills. And within this enthralling story, there is courtroom drama, intrigues, and political maneuvers and machinations. But what I love most about this novel is the historical accuracy. The wealth of Cicero's body of works that survive till this day has allowed the author to create a story as historically-accurate as a novel can get. Simply loved it.

Ericksmit Ericksmit ericksmit — Targeted, by WBAI radio host Deepa Fernandes, is an eye-opening analysis of the harsh transformation U.S. immigration policy has undergone in the past ten years. The gems of the book are Fernandes’ moving interviews with non-citizens and her heart-tugging chronicles of their often unbelievable persecution, but just when you think Targeted has lapsed into insubstantial sentimentality, Fernandes unleashes a barrage of damning evidence and carefully researched statistics to supplement her argument. The thesis? Post-9/11 legislation ostensibly designed to protect us from terrorism is being used to oust or imprison migrant workers, foreign students, and even asylum seekers; taxpayers are footing the bill and a zillion-dollar hi-tech security and prison-industrial complex is pocketing the profits. Immigration is in the news every day, so be sure to read about the parts that network anchors won’t mention. (I wrote that review as a staff pick for the bookstore/coffeeshop where I work)

Cleber Aguiar cleberaguiar — The first half of the book was a really hard read for me, I didn't enjoy it but forced myself to go on. The second half of the book I loved and now I can't wait to read the next.

Hanna Trussler hannatrussler — i loved the premise of this book. Thought it was well written albeit sad and the reader knows the outcome. I found myself yearning to re-read Hemingway.

David Alvario davidalvario — This is the first and only Michener I've read after having a few friends recommend him. An interesting read but the writing didn't really grab me. I can appreciate the level of historical detail he includes but his characters seemed a bit like caricatures at times and the last two chapters threw me off. What a weird way to end a book.
