Samuel Vazquez samvazquez — This is a story about a trashed, vacant lot in Cleveland, Ohio that becomes a flourishing community garden when a young Vietnamese girl plants 6 Lima beans behind an abandoned fridge in the lot. Each chapter is told by a new character who discovers the garden and plants their own plot. This is a story of how this garden broke down language barriers which had never been broken and created a community of people who looked out for each other and spoke to one another, whereas before neither would have been thought of. I really enjoyed this story. It is so sad how we miss out on wonderful friendships because we don't venture out of our comfort zone and talk to people. I am completely guilty of this as I sit in my apartment next door to a couple I have never met. The world would be a friendlier and healthier place if we could all have community gardens to bond in.

Michael Rabor mrabor — This is really more of a 3.5, but I didn't quite want to round up to 4 stars. I think it's good, and I enjoyed it pretty well, but it's just not really my kind of reading. Picked it up to be the Inspirational reading for my Popular Materials class. I like the author's points about the value of being alone and about wanting to spend one-on-one time with loved ones - even, say, with each of one's children in turn - as well as in larger groups. I hadn't thought about that much. I tend to think of parents and kids as having "family time" together, and couples having their own together time, but not so much about the individual bonds between each parent and each child. Given that this was written in the 1950s, I'm intrigued by the author's ideas about the roles of women. (And, if I'm honest, surprised at how seldom I was offended by her ideas on the subject. I can only imagine that she either was quite enlightened or was writing very carefully.)

Dácio Ribeiro dacioribeiro — It started out so nicely and then just sort of fizzled out. However, there was a lot of good information in the book.

Mateusz Fryc mateuszfryc897 — I am glad that I gave Gaiman another chance and read this book although, admittedly, it was only because the book won the Newbery Award. This was a refreshingly unique read and a pleasant change from the profoundly heart-crushing novels that are often given these prestigious awards. Nobody Owens is a fine character but he is just one of many fine characters who added to my enjoyment of this book.
