For those of us who feel that Joni Mitchell is the world's greatest living artist, AND the greatest Canadian who's ever lived, this book would seem to be a must-read. Sadly, this biography contains so many errors, both in fact and typography, that any longtime fan of Joni's will become annoyed fairly quickly. All of which is not to say that Ms. Mitchell's legion of fans will not enjoy reading Brian Hinton's effort. Joni makes for a fascinating subject, and her life has been as full of incident as any celebrity's out there. Still, one turns the last page of this book feeling that there should've been more; that we still don't know what makes Joni "tick"; that there are huge gaps that have gone unrecorded. Mr. Hinton, having been limited, schoolboy fashion, by what the libraries and old publications could provide, and not having done ANY original interviews himself, sheds no light on Joni that hasn't been shed before. He merely provides the useful service of compiling dozens of old articles and interviews and putting them together in a nice, readable order. And while it is always interesting to hear another Mitchell fan's views on her work, Hinton's interpretations, while at times dead-on and insightful, are often strained and ludicrous. (Are we really to believe, for example, that in Joni's painting for the front cover of "Clouds," the flower is "a cross between a lily and a poppy...some kind of Canadian hybrid, or a plant invented by Mitchell herself, playing God," and thus her way of offering us a clue to the album's theme: paradox?) On the up side, there are some anecdotes that I, a Joni fan of some 40 years, had never heard before, but these nuggets are more than counterbalanced by the remarkable carelessness with which the book has been put together. The errors in this book are legion!!! Space does not permit me to go into the dozens and dozens of goofs, but any longtime fan of Ms. Mitchell's will quickly spot them. So when all is said and done, Hinton's work remains a book that all Joni's fans should read and get annoyed at. Any of these fans will enjoy the book up to a point, as long as they don't go in expecting the work of, say, a Donald Spoto. Ms. Mitchell deserves THAT kind of treatment, but, to paraphrase the words of another great songwriter, Sammy Cahn, this will have to do until the real thing comes along...

Short, spare, sparse, unsettling: a young child survives the killing of the rest of her family allowing Baricco to explore damage, loss, revenge, violence in this short, philosophical novel. Neither a great novel nor a beach read, this is well worth spending an hour with (that is all it will take) and then several days thinking over.

** spoiler alert ** I liked this story well enough, but there could have been a lot of world-building that wasn't done and the last 1/4 of the book (or so) was just sex. Got so boring I just skimmed over that looking for conversation. I also thought some of the things done on the planet of the guys was pretty gross... I'm just saying. It's not one I will re-read in the future.

Surviving Summer Vacation Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

This is a story about a trashed, vacant lot in Cleveland, Ohio that becomes a flourishing community garden when a young Vietnamese girl plants 6 Lima beans behind an abandoned fridge in the lot. Each chapter is told by a new character who discovers the garden and plants their own plot. This is a story of how this garden broke down language barriers which had never been broken and created a community of people who looked out for each other and spoke to one another, whereas before neither would have been thought of. I really enjoyed this story. It is so sad how we miss out on wonderful friendships because we don't venture out of our comfort zone and talk to people. I am completely guilty of this as I sit in my apartment next door to a couple I have never met. The world would be a friendlier and healthier place if we could all have community gardens to bond in.

I loved "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" more than I liked "Everything is Illuminated." This funny, quirky, yet sad book is told from the perspecitves of 3 characters:a young boy trying to come to terms with the loss of his father, the boy's grandmother and her estranged husband. Highly recommended!
