Nur Husna nurhusnateera — I will admit I was forced to read this book; reading the jacket blurb only rang warning bells: I could careless about "family" dramas and "life changing events"--or books relying on these cliches to sell themselves. BUT while this novel is a family drama, it is also a discussion of competing academic approaches to art and the moral conseuqences of choosing to view art through any kind of theoretical lens. So, for those of you in grad school who have been reading about agency and wondering if there is any, you might enjoy this book which offers a practical (some might say conservative) view of putting theory into practice.

Kristie L kristielst0e84 — This book has great historical significance. And I've read it twice, am a graduate student in English literature, and just can't get on board with it. I can be pressed to give it two stars, since parts of it have their moments. But I just get so bored.

Weed Music weedmusic — OK. It's not four stars because it's well written... or has great character development....but, something made me want to keep reading until I was done! Very fast and entertaining.. nothing more.

Josie Hardy josiehardy — Eh. Can't really conjure more than eh about this book. In some ways it reminds me a lot of the books I used to read when I was 15/16/17 about girls in regency England and trying to find a husband, but in other ways the husband-finding parts were secondary to Lilly helping her father's shop (horrors!! a girl! Working!). The Christian aspect of the book didn't really come into play until the second half, and maybe because it hadn't been overwhelming for most of the book it felt jarring to suddenly have it in the story. Some situations were just too convenient, and by the end of the book I was wondering if Lilly ever met ANY man her age who DIDN'T fall in love with her. Also, revelations at the books end were just... wrong. Sloppy almost. As if the author reached 350 pages and was like "oh, gotta wrap up the mother storyline- ideas of family thrown out the window, GO!" All in all, just... eh.
