The start of a new fantasy series that, like Bujold's other works, is full of great dialogue and compelling characters; however, it suffers from being really, really oddly paced. All the action is concentrated in the first half of the book, the rest given over to a romance plot that leaves what one would generally think of as the main plot dangling until the next volume. I actually really enjoyed how Bujold dealt with the culture clash aspects—rather than just have one of the protagonists say, "Oh, what will our families think!" we actually got to see what their families thought; it made me want to read more books (even non-SF/F books) about "mixed marriages" of whatever sort. So I enjoyed this a lot even though the strange pacing made the overall effect...odd.

I will admit I was forced to read this book; reading the jacket blurb only rang warning bells: I could careless about "family" dramas and "life changing events"--or books relying on these cliches to sell themselves. BUT while this novel is a family drama, it is also a discussion of competing academic approaches to art and the moral conseuqences of choosing to view art through any kind of theoretical lens. So, for those of you in grad school who have been reading about agency and wondering if there is any, you might enjoy this book which offers a practical (some might say conservative) view of putting theory into practice.

Riveting when I could sit down to read it. Very interesting because it not only covered the fire, but also looked at the socio-economic situation of the people who were involved - from the immigrant workers who were involved in the fire all the way up through the politicians and the owners. Very well written.

I can say that I honestly read this book cover-to-cover with the exception of the Index and the Money/Finance section. As for the latter, I decided that since I have no understanding of money beyond paying bills, I really didn't have enough knowledge to follow the chapter. Anyway, I was left with only a few comments: 1. Andrew was right -- this is a book to keep with you and not return to the library. It's an excellent guide. 2. The book is not necessarily valuable so much for its ethical discussions of consumerism in different industries as its guides for more information. After every section, there were links for either more information on a specific topic, or for companies that are more ethically minded than the mainstream corporations we see daily. There's also an appendix of fair-trade certified companies. 3. The historian/scholar/critical thinker in me would like an endnotes section listing the references for all of the comments made in the ethical discussion sections. It often quoted what was being said by various sides on a topic, but it doesn't show references, which makes it hard to determine the source/context of the quote. Understandably, this is a guide to shopping that lays out some of the basic issues to keep in mind when consuming products/services; it's not meant to be a documented encyclopedia. But endnotes do increase credibility, regardless.

I was so disappointed in this book. So many people had said I would love it but I didn't. The story line is nothing new, two teenagers turn out to be something more then ordinary and the fate of the world lays in their hands. Every mythological creature seems to make an appearance (most of them evil) but the writing itself is pretty average. The characters are very two dimensional and don't get fleshed out during the book. There was nothing there to make me pick up book 2 in the series. Two and a half stars from me.
