_andu_turkar
Nandkumar Oturkar _andu_turkar — No fooling folks...a middle-aged MOM kicking some serious fantasy rump and raining pain and destruction on the assbozos that stole her children...can you say Now, if that doesn’t sound like an appealing (and long overdue) premise to a fantasy story than may I please take a moment to remind you of the following: HI…I AM ONE OF THE COOLEST MOVIE HEROES (MALE OR FEMALE) OF ALL TIME AND I WASTED AN ENTIRE COLONY OF SLIMY, ACID-BLEEDING, DEADLY-PROJECTILE-TEETH-SPEWING, TOUGH AS NAILS ALIEN MONSTERS…WHAT HAVE YOU DONE LATELY?!!! . . . Or how about: . . . HELLO…I AM A SCHOOLTEACHER, WIFE AND MOTHER IN A SMALL TOWN WHO LOVES HER LIFE AND HER FAMILY….OH I ALMOST FORGOT, I AM ALSO A CIA ASSASSIN WITH SKILLS LIKE A NINJA WHO CAN DROP YOU QUICKER THAN TIGER WOODS SPONSER AND SEND YOU OFF WITH THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT…ANY QUESTIONS? . . . This story is set in the shared world created by Buckell and Paolo Bacigalupi. As I mentioned in my review of Bacigalupi’s story, The Alchemist, here we have a world in which magic exists but its use has been savagely curtailed as a result of the devastating effect that the use of magic has on the environment. Employing magic causes the growth and spread of a fatally poisonous “bramble” that encroaches and destroys every city in which the old hocus-pocus is used. As a result of this deadly relationship between magic and the bramble, anyone caught using magic of any kind is immediately put to death by the “Executioner’s” axe. Or, in the case of this story…the Executioness’ Axe. Tana, the daughter of an aging executioner is called upon to take her father’s place and carry out the execution of a “magic user” for the ruler of the province in which she lives. After performing her duty (though you have to read the description of the killing scene as it is well done but a little tough to handle), Tana returns home to find that her home has been destroyed, her father killed and her children stolen by raiders from another City. These “raiders” believe that the only way to get rid of the “bramble” is to follow “The Way” and kill everyone who ever lived where magic was practiced with the exception of children who are taken and “educated” (aka brainwashed) into following the Way. Well Tana immediately sets out to rescue her children and joins up with an opposing army and eventually rises to a position of leadership due to her intelligence and strategic thinking. Yep, she's not only a badass, but a very shrewd, intelligent badass Kind of reminds me of say: THIS IS M…TELL THOSE BASTARDS IF THEY DON’T RETURN MY CHILDREN TO ME IMMEDIATELY I SHALL HAVE THEM KILLED. Well, if I haven’t been clear enough, I LOVED the concept of the story. In addition, I thought Buckell’s writing and the back story was excellent. The only reason I did not rate this higher is that the story did not have enough time to adequately show the transition of Tana from Mother, the rookie executioness, the warlord, etc. and so these transitions were a bit rushed. However, overall I thought the story was very good and Tana was a superb character. 3.5 stars. Recommended.

Decade Type decadetypefoundry — ** spoiler alert ** I recently realized a very important thing about Meyer as an author; although she may draw you in and make you think that you're reading something worthwhile once you've finished it and actually think about what you've just read you realize there is absolutely NOTHING of value or interest contained within the pages. The only exception to this is Breaking Dawn, because I managed to come to this conclusion while forcing myself to sit down and actually finish it. Breaking Dawn is split into three parts two which are beyond irritating and one which can maybe called ok. Here is Breaking Dawn summarized in Part 1: Edward and Bella get married. Bella falls pregnant. Am I the only one who sees a problem, well ok one of many, with this. Edward is a vampire, he is undead and doesn't have a pulse, therefore shouldn't it be impossible for blood to flow to the area it need to flow in order to make a baby. And how did the sperm survive in his body which is ice cold, for over 100 years? Part 2: Bella is pregnant. Baby is killing her. Edward is upset and hates the child. Jacob is also upset. This was probably the only half redeeming part in the book because for once it wasn't narrated by woe-is-me Bella. Nothing else really happens Part 3: Bella is finally changed, after 3 and half novels of whining about it. Baby is born. Baby grows up, Jacob imprints on baby. big build up to an epic battle which ends up falling completely flat. There are two main problems I have with this part. The first is that Bella's daughter not only ages quickly but she manages to mature in just a matter of days. Isn't Bella lucky? She doesn't even need to think about the terrible two, nope because guess what her daughter manages to fit years of growing and maturity into just a couple of days! Then even if you manage to get past this then there is the fact that then all of a sudden she stops, right in the teen years just like her mom and dad! Isn't that just awesome, they don't need to go through any of the awkward development stages! So then all that conflict is solved, Bella is alive, her daughter miraculously matures in a few days, Jacob has met the girl of his dreams (who despite everything is only a few days old. What is it with Meyer and pedophilia? She seems to think that as long as they look the right age it's OK?) Everything is just dandy... but wait the Volturi are coming, and they are out for blood! Yay! finally a chance for Meyer to redeem herself for forcing anyone to sit through and sift through the pointless garbage that came before at least there is going to be an epic battle! Meyer manages to build up the tension quite well, not great but enough. I was nervous for the battle, I was even trying to decide who she might kill off then... NOTHING! All they do is stare at each other for a while, then Alice returns with news informing the Volturi that everything is fine they can go home. And the DO! Just turn around and LEAVE! Honestly I have never wanted throw a book outside my window into the rain in my life! DO NOT READ THIS! even if you enjoyed the rest of the series and you want to finish it off don't. make up your own ending it's bound to be better!

程 飘 991146900ad31 — I am adoring this series. Strong character development and fun magic bits. A bit of the let's abuse our main character that's been going around, but overall I LOVE Miranda.

Sylvain Renou _ylvain_enou — As I recall, this book kept me interested in the characters. I was also partial to the setting.

paovargasdelaunoy
Paola Vargas paovargasdelaunoy — The book centers on an island off the coast of North Carolina and tells the fictional story of Theodosia Burr (daughter of Aaron Burr), whose ship was lost at sea, and the three remaining elderly inhabitants of that island in the late 1960s. I almost stopped reading this book several times because it was really not gripping me. The end did bring things together, but it was still amazingly slow for such a short book.

Tyler Devenney tyrdev — Not usually a fan of novellas -- find them too short -- but this one and book 1 were a nice way to spend a couple hours. I'm hoping there will be a third book for their friend Morgan.

egasattwika
Ega Sattwika egasattwika — Some things were different in the trilogy than in the series, but that is only to be expected. I can't decide if I like the ways things occurred in the books or in the television series better. I think it's a tie. Reading this helps you understand the television series more and vice versa.
