Hanif Halim anip_new712b — One of the things I love most about literature is the suspension of disbelief thing. Honestly. I mean - a book about Nordic god of lying who suddenly decides to work as a paid "dirty work" guy for Christian angels? I am hooked. This book however proved a lot tougher as far as suspension of disbelief goes. It started with the blurb. The blurb actually told me the book was funny. I should have known better then. And after that it only got worse. I mean I did not expect Crime and Punishment. I did not expect Pride and prejudice. All I wanted was something warm, something to laugh about so I could get myself through a particularly nasty cold/flu case. And the book failed miserably. The setup had its potential, which makes it even more sad. I am sorry, but it is not even remotely funny for me. I smiled out of politeness a few times, because I could see how the author was trying, and trying HARD. Well, I thought - maybe the love story proves a bit better. Yet again I failed to suspend my disbelief. I did not expect a deep analysis of complexity of human relationships. All I wanted was a fully predictable happy end with likeable characters to get me through a particularly nasty... Long story short - another failure. I mean this is to be a top-notch lawyer, best of her class, three prizes and full equity partnership in a top firm? How did she even get through law school is beyond me, she is such a crybaby and silly too. She handles media with a complete lack of confidence or intelligence. This from a woman who got to the top of law establishment? I don't buy it. Don't even get me started on likeability thing. Most of the time I just wanted to shake her, she is so annoying, arrogant and well, unintelligent. The male lead is so cliche it hurts even in a book of this kind. And I give it to the author - the ending was fully predictable, just as I expected. The book had its potential to get beyond the superficial kind of chick lit, but it just did not work. The choice Sam makes could be more thoughtful - why should choosing between housekeeping and law be considered antifeminist? Feminism is about CHOICE. Being a housekeeper is a full time job that requires flexibility, planning, diplomacy and practical skill (and I'm not even including cooking). Why should it be looked down upon by lawyers? The perfect lady of the house in 10 rooms mansion could be just as much of a stressed, lonely perfectionist as a top lawyer working 24/7. And so on, and so on. But all that was carefully omitted by author.

Johanna Kleyla _ohanna_leyla — I love this book. I reread it about once a year. It calms me.

fero_varam
Fero Varam fero_varam — It's about a naive Christian salesman, and it's kind of smarmy. Wilder isn't a holier-than-though kind of guy, so the hero here doesn't go far, and neither does the story, really.

Nadifi Abdessamad nadifiabdessamad — ** spoiler alert ** This was yet another example of why I love Neil Gaiman's writing, he writes the world as we know but just a little different. It's so real that you instantly believe it, in fact it's so enchanting that you wish you could swap the real world for the fictional one. I haven't been reading much lately, but The Graveyard Book was so enjoyable that I tore right through it in just a few sittings. Bod was well-written and a very sympathetic character. His nature as he grew up, became curious about the world, was burned by his experience with other children, his friendship with Scarlet; everything was believable felt like a natural progression as he aged. I loved the concept of him having special rights in the graveyard and learning about both the world and the graveyard from its inhabitants. Silas was a great character, I liked him a lot. I loved that it was never explicitly stated that he was a vampire, but the subtle hints built up throughout the book until it became naturally obvious. I was a little disappointed that we didn't learn more about the Everyman Jacks and the Honour Guard, but being aimed at a young audience I can see why the story stayed focused on Bod and didn't go into too much detail elsewhere. And it's always better to be left wanting more than to wish you could get back the time you spent reading! I hope Neil writes some more in this universe one day.

_on_ore
Mon More _on_ore — sounds intriguing: [close:] November, a dark, rainy Tuesday, late afternoon. This is my ideal time to be in a bookstore. The shortened light of the afternoon and the idleness and hush of the hour gather everything close, the shelves and the books and the few other customers who graze head-bent in the narrow aisles. I’ve come to find a book. In The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, Buzbee, a former bookseller and sales representative, celebrates the unique experience of the bookstore—the smell and touch of books, getting lost in the deep canyons of shelves, and the silent community of readers. He shares his passion for books, which began with ordering through The Weekly Reader in grade school. Interwoven throughout is a fascinating historical account of the bookseller’s trade—from the great Alexandria library with an estimated one million papyrus scrolls to Sylvia Beach’s famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare and Company, which led to the extraordinary effort to publish and sell James Joyce’s Ulysses during the 1920s. Rich with anecdotes, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop is the perfect choice for those who relish the enduring pleasures of spending an afternoon finding just the right book. [close:]

_loyd_del_esign
Lloyd Edel _loyd_del_esign — My 8th grade son was reading this book for school so I decided to re-read it. I think the last time I read it was around 1984, so it was interesting to read again from an older and 21st century perspective. It is very powerful, although occasionally it drags a bit. I found the parts about Newspeak the most intriguing. It really speaks to the power of language, and the need of totalitarian governments to control language. Especially interesting in this day of global, personal, instant communication.
