Awesome! Loved it. Took a couple of chapters to get in to, but it's classic Holmes/Russell that I missed so much in the last book.

For years I've known that I probably am an evangelical, but the label comes with stereotypes, both positive and negative, that are often confusing and unhelpful. In this book John Stott lays down his best definition of what and evangelical is in theological terms. As the primary spokesperson for evangelicals globally, Stott would know best what one is. He helpfully puts it within the historical context of evangelicalism as well as fundamentalism (in the process making a clarifying distinction between the two). He then lays what he believes to be the basic theological foundation for all evangelicals, charismatic, justice & peace oriented, or even fundamentalist. His explanations are helpful if intellectual. I recommend this book to anyone who is frustrated by the question "what does it mean to be evangelical?" or just curious as to what it entails. It can get dry, but is not incredibly dense. Overall a worthwhile read.

Angela Davis is pretty awesome. I didn’t really know what to expect going into it, and it’s basically a historical examination of the intersection of struggles against sexism, racism, and classism. Or, more accurately, against slavery and lynching, against capitalism, and for woman suffrage and reproductive freedom. I think it’s interesting how Davis, at this point in time at least, certainly saw socialism (rooted in anti-racism and anti-sexism) as the answer to capitalist oppression. I really liked how she kept all three together in focus throughout the book and could critically engage the work of activists for one cause in light of the others – like how Frederick Douglass’s campaigning against slavery included a keen analysis of the unique situation of black women, but Susan B Anthony’s campaigning for woman suffrage violently ignored all non-white middle class women, despite her personal relationships with Douglass and Ida B Wells.

I've been on an Octavia Butler kick. I just reread . It is such a disturbingly, good book. The present and past become blurred as the main character travels through time from 1976 Los Angeles to 1812 Chesapeake. Butler tells a story about slavery, racism, difference and love. I couldn't put it down.

As the long title suggests, Sir Richard Francis Burton and Algernon Swinburne, real Victorians, are the lead characters in this novel that is at once mystery, fantasy, alt history and steampunk. And possibly a few other things, too. It includes not just not just real people Burton and Swinburne, but also Darwin, Galton, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Florence Nightingale and Oscar Wilde, among others. Add airships (but not, alas, dirigibles), flying arm chairs, foul mouthed parakeets that act as messengers, letter carrying dogs that eat constantly, spontaneously combustible wolves, pneumatic railways and the rather adorable broomcats -the only genetically modified critter that didn’t end up with a rather gross side effect. The novel gets off to a rather slow start- I almost gave up on it during Burton’s backstory. I’m glad I didn’t, though, because it soon evolved into nonstop action. So much action, and so many characters, in fact, that at times I had to stop and think back for a moment before going on. It’s a fine adventure, and a grand example of the time traveler’s paradox. And in the middle of all this action and fantasy, the author gives us characters that really work. One character goes from villain (there are multiple villains in this book, so I’m not giving anything away) to example of pathos. And he’s not the only character to change- I’m not sure any of the main players escape change or growth. I recommend this book, even if I can’t quite figure out what to call it.
