Czipczer Philip philipczip0f80 — I really love love Nabokov, and this was so much fun. Pale Fire took me some time to get through but as soon as I was finished, I started rereading portions of the book. I love books like this, wrapped in mystery that is inherent in the piece itself. I found the Foreward amusing, but didn't really understand it until I'd read through the whole thing. I was really drawn into the poem once I was in it, especially the section with the daughter. And of course the extensive Commentary was both hilarious and infuriating. n I have to say that I found Kinbote so intensely unlikable that throughout, even as I was flipping pages, I wondered how Nabokov had created something that would make me want to keep reading despite how much I despised his narrator AND the fact that we're led to "guess" the secret early on. Perhaps it's just the process of seeing this man's delusion that is fascinating? I have no idea. What I love about this piece is that there are so many pieces of a puzzle that you can extract, even in the final Index! My only quibble was that perhaps the final few lines in the Commentary seem unnecessary, and tell us too much we already know. But I'll have to reread it to see if there's something I missed. Overall, while this wasn't something that hit me on an emotional level (I usually reserve my fifth star because I love a book on a heartbreaking visceral level), this was a pursuit of intellect and play and psychology that I can't resist in a book. Nabokov has never let me down!

José Castro joselucianorc — Half a book and still twice as entertaining as anything I´ve read in the past few years. Having stumbled upon the songs of ice and fire recently I luckily avoided having to wait some 6 odd years for the second half of this fourth installment in the series but my heart goes out to all those patient fans who waited and waited. Telling the stories of half the characters (and not even the most interesting of characters at that) this installment offers up some amazing levels of intrigue. Martin gives a close look at the minds of the Lannisters and the court at Kings Landing after Tywins untimely death. Cersei becomes ever more hungry for power and unleashes one bad decision after another while Jaimes´ lack of a sword hand forces him to take a closer look at who he has become and who he wants to be. With sprinkles from Briennes´ search for Sansa, Dornes anger at the loss of prince Oberyn and Sansas stay with treacherous Petyr Littlefinger A feast for Crows should leave everyone hungering for more.

Migle Svirskyte miglesvirskyte — Who isn't at least vaguely familiar with Alice in Wonderland? No one, right? Well, who isn't a little more familiar with the story. Me, apparently. Never having read the story before, I thought I'd go ahead and give it a try. Normally books with size 14 font and large margins aren't my thing, though it has happened before. But this book was a pleasure to spend time with. It was easy to feel like a child playing pretend all the way through both stories. The way impossible or nonsensical things just seems to happen is all very real in a child's imagination. Jumping from story to story without waiting for any conclusion is also something I remember never seemed to bother me as a kid. Through the Looking Glass was much more intense in this way than Alice in Wonderland. Things seemed to appear out of nowhere, Alice was transported between scenes in the middle of sentences, uncontrolled nonsense was all around. It was much more disorienting than Alice in Wonderland, and there was not very much hint of a plot even. The words "Attention Deficit" come to mind when reading that book. That, or perhaps we wonder if the author was high on something. Both books have a nice touch of modernism and postmodernism. Absurdism is abundant both in these books and in other modernism artwork. And the postmodern passion for puns is pervasive. (No word back yet from the alliteration administration, however...) Alice is frequently confused by other characters when they misinterpret her sentences, not quite realizing the homonyms she is using. It does raise the key postmodern question of who determines meaning: the speaker, the listener, or the disappearing, grinning Cheshire Cat?
