1972 Caldecott Medal Winner At least two kinds of paint and I think crayon were used in the illustrations for this book. Lots of oranges, yellows, greens, brown and purple. Pretty charming and pastoral. A fox drinks an old woman's bucket of milk, and she punishes him by cutting off his tale. She says she will sew it back on if he gives her back some milk. So off he goes, but the cow wants some grass before she'll give him milk, the grass wants some water before he can have some of it, etc. A fun cumulative story. Eventually the fox gets his tail back.

Joe Orton redefined English theater in a way that is almost impossible to describe except to say that anyone who has ever laughed at Monty Python sketch owes him a pint. Violent, insane, brilliantly funny, this collection of plays displays the virtuosic wit and biting social satire that defined Orton's short career. If there is ultimately a lack of compassion for humanity it may be what we would have ultimately seen in Orton's later plays if he had lived to write them. In the end, it is this lack of broader scope that makes his work amusing and interesting to me rather than deeply satisfying- but that he's memorable is absolutely certain, and very much worth reading.

I would have rated this a five however it is extremely difficult reading. However, the effort is rewarded with an incredible insight that leaves me feeling cheated that this man's life was cut so short. In fact, he was killed just days after finishing this first manuscript leaving his brother the arduous task of recollating and getting it to publish. For that, I am ever grateful for his brother's dedication. However, the second manuscript eluded to is not to come so more insights have been lost. However, what he has uncovered is profound and enlightening if not extremely difficult to follow. His thought patterns are complex and I found myself rereading sentences several times, saying them aloud, and in some cases writing them down in order to make sure I understand what is was he was saying. The reading was in short but full bursts and I truly feel the results were well worth the effort. Best for Jung students and hardcore enthusiasts.

This was a very short read for me and only took me 45 minutes. The story was about a woman who was killed by her boyfriend and then she was haunting him because she need closure. She needed to find her body. Impossible as that would be since he fed it to the neighbors for a cookout. Sadistic? Just a little. She is a little snarky and funny but the story gets a little repetitive after awhile. For someone who enjoys this kind of story they will enjoy this short read.

I really love love Nabokov, and this was so much fun. Pale Fire took me some time to get through but as soon as I was finished, I started rereading portions of the book. I love books like this, wrapped in mystery that is inherent in the piece itself. I found the Foreward amusing, but didn't really understand it until I'd read through the whole thing. I was really drawn into the poem once I was in it, especially the section with the daughter. And of course the extensive Commentary was both hilarious and infuriating. n I have to say that I found Kinbote so intensely unlikable that throughout, even as I was flipping pages, I wondered how Nabokov had created something that would make me want to keep reading despite how much I despised his narrator AND the fact that we're led to "guess" the secret early on. Perhaps it's just the process of seeing this man's delusion that is fascinating? I have no idea. What I love about this piece is that there are so many pieces of a puzzle that you can extract, even in the final Index! My only quibble was that perhaps the final few lines in the Commentary seem unnecessary, and tell us too much we already know. But I'll have to reread it to see if there's something I missed. Overall, while this wasn't something that hit me on an emotional level (I usually reserve my fifth star because I love a book on a heartbreaking visceral level), this was a pursuit of intellect and play and psychology that I can't resist in a book. Nabokov has never let me down!
