umm . . . this was nothing like 'Life of Pi' like the cover said. I have to give it to Maine's imagination but overall I thought this quite boring and blah. Plus, you can't use New Testament allusions/phrasing when you're talking about Noah; it just doesn't make sense.

Well, Ms. Roberts has sucked me back in again with four great, and strong, female characters I really connected with. I'm really looking forward to reading more about them in the next three books in the series.

Eolyn, Karin Gastreich's debut novel, is an excellent example of the other breed of Epic Fantasy epitomized by the works of Guy Gavriel Kay, which is to say, not the traditional "unlikely but fated and/or prophesied hero must face the dreaded return of dark lord." Instead, Gastreich's Eolyn focuses on the emotional, political, and physical conflicts between powerful and three-dimensional characters. You don't have any villains who do villainy because, well, that's just what villains do. Each character has compelling reasonable motivations. The action sequences are executed wonderfully and are unpredictable in that the character who "normally" triumphs doesn't always triumph. Gastreich launches her characters on unavoidable collision courses and with her tendency to avoid stereotypes-- or use them to her advantage to create a surprising turn of events--the climatic sequence is thrilling because, for once, you really don't know how it will end. The beginning of Eolyn, a clearly intentional nod to the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm, may give some readers pause as it feels young for an adult fantasy, but sticking with the story is amply rewarded and Gastreich does something with Eolyn in 328 pages that many fantasy authors fail to do with twice that page count: tell a complete and satisfying tale as the first novel of a trilogy. Readers of the aforementioned Guy Gavriel Kay and Robin Hobb will definitely enjoy this novel. (This review is of an Advanced Review Copy)

This is the only book of Madeline L'Engle's I've read that wasn't in the young adult genre. I enjoyed it, but it also made me think she should have stuck to younger audiences; Ring of Endless Light and Wrinkle in Time seemed so naturally written. This book said to me "I should try to think about what would interest adults."

where minimal text = good, but at a cost; one moves thru too quickly. favorable art styling. lovely useage of newspaper text in word bubbles to convey conversations about stocks, sports. decent enough story about growing up, accidents, regrets. not as gripping as hipster media reviews would have you believe.

A very early Berenstain Bears book, before the characters had the familiar look we all know and love now. I enjoy how the book takes us from one silly Papa Bear moment to another even more silly, and does it over and over again. The rhythm and rhymes of the book are fun to read aloud.

I picked up this book as part of my goal to get more acquainted with my section of responsibility at the library. That is, Mystery, Adventure, and Suspense. This book got a starred review in some publication (either Publisher's Weekly or Library Journal), so I picked it up. And I liked it, really. In terms of plot and characters it was interesting, the pace was good, and the twists were super twisty. The only stumbling block was the stilted language, which could either come from the differences in communications across culture (the author is Japanese) or from the translation into English itself. Some things just don't translate, ya know? But I also think this is something I could get used to if I read more in the genre. I mean, I wasn't born loving Agatha Christie's talk of tea times and house maids, but I got used to it. What I'm saying is that this is an excellent mystery that provides lots of food for thought.
