Lee Smith tells great stories. Lots of dysfunctional family stuff here. You get a glimpse into the lives and experiences of several members of a family across three or four generations, which carries with it the limitation that it's only glimpses. No space to get deeper into the individual's psyche. Some of the family are very into Keeping Up Appearances, while others totally reject this and seem to flaunt their unconventionality. A good read.

** spoiler alert ** This is a book I won in a Goodreads giveaway. I am certainly glad I did because I would not have sought out this book on my own. It is a good story about a 2 boys from completly different cultures coming togther and falling in love for the first time. The thing that is so great about this book is that it is written from a 13 year old boys perspective. It shows the coming of age emotions and feelings. I am a grown, straight, white woman, with nothing in common with the main character, yet I relate with the characters experiences and emotions. I apreciate the love and devotion he has to his friend and the tender moments they share. It brought me back to my own experience with my first love as a teen and the inner conflict with craving independence from my parents while still really knowing I was a child.

As I usually find with the Rough Guide series, this wasn't as aesthetically-pleasing as most other guidebooks, seriously lacking in pretty, colourful pictures etc, but once you get past that you realise that this means there is more room for detailed information, and you don't need pictures anyway if you are going to see the real thing! One word of caution though, some of the information, particularly prices, are already out of date. I actually found that some of the admission costs for attractions had tripled!
