Wow, I really liked this one. Really liked it. Not in, perhaps, a love-it-forever-sing-it’s-praises-read-it-over-and-over-again way. But just in a, “This is just such a wonderful, touching, lovely book” way. Part of it was the surprise. I thought it would be a middle grade book, and I haven't had good luck with fantasy middle grade books recently. But this wasn't really middle grade (or at least its upper middle grade) despite the fact that the leads are 12 (though a very mature and pretty badass 12). I think what I loved most of all were the characters. Trei is a great hero—-brave, decent, understanding, bright, and dealing with the overwhelming grief of losing his entire family, his city, and, ultimately, his country when his relatives there don’t want him. He finds himself dealing with divided loyalties, too, when his birth country goes to war with his adopted country. And I really love that Trei looks at the world through Tolounnese eyes. He knows that Toloun has the best soldiers. Hands down. And he has that honor and bravery ingrained in him in ways that an Islander might never fully understand (well, maybe Prince Ceirfei). I loved Araene, too. Classic girl-has-to-dress-as-boy, but it was so well-done it felt fresh. And she was properly courageous, and vulernable and smart and resourceful. Just a great, great heroine. I think the world-building was also great. I love that the countries (Tolounn and the Floating Islands) have very distinct personalities. And I love that this is managed with pretty light strokes and also without relying too heavily on making them earth-equivalents. Tolounn has echoes of Rome—military nation, conquering, loyal soldiers with the power to overturn rulers. But it is not Rome-in-disguise. It is it’s own place. I liked the politics that were inserted and how everyone was just so badass. The Little Emperor—I wouldn’t want to cross him. He seems very bright, very in control, very assured, very honorable. A dangerous man. In fact, all the competent adults were very worrying in their absolute competence. I wouldn’t want to cross any of them. There were bits when it slowed and my attention wavered…I don’t care about flying training at all. But there was only ever half a chapter where my interest dragged. Otherwise, it was pretty intense. I hope there’s a sequel. It doesn’t need one, per se. But there are threads that could be pulled tighter and storylines I want to see progress further. I checked Neumeier' website and there's no hint of a whisper of a sequel so far. She’s talking about a bunch of other books she’s planning to write and none of them are sequels. I will say that I guess my one complaint for this book was the names. They were all familiar but strange enough that I couldn’t keep them straight. It didn’t help that Neumeier actually had kind of a naming scheme going on where a lot of the boys had names ending in “ei” (and, in fact, I think all male Island names end in “i” but I can’t be sure without going back and checking). Very logical for an actual culture, very confusing for a reader. And all the adult mages kept getting confused in my brain, too. But the names were at least short and not ridiculous as tends to happen in fantasy.

Like reading a train wreck - I couldn't help but read it to see what bizarre thing would happen next.

Took some time to get into, but was worth the work. Gave a modern portrait of Afghanistan. It's fiction, but was educational.

A good book, not great, but good. I didn't realize that the German's had occupied Guernsey during WW II and how close the island is to France, so besides being a delightful book, I learned some things, too.

I enjoyed the element of mystery that this story uses. I was amazed at the creative problem solving techniques that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used in the story. The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Watson explore more that solving mysteries and catching killers, they show the depth friendship.

This was the best historical fiction book I've read in a long time. It begins with the marriage of Holliday's parents, and moves quickly through his childhood to his dental practice in Texas and in Dodge City, KS. While in Dodge, Holliday looks into the death of a young man of mixed race, whose education he had encouraged. It ends with his decision to move to Arizona territory. Though Holliday is the focus, and Kate and the Earps also get quite a bit of coverage, what is most interesting is the backstories provided to so many side characters. Various ex-prostitutes, the Chinese laundry operator, a visiting priest, and local bigwigs all provide insights into many lives in the Old West. I found these stories to be even more engaging than the question of who killed John Horse Simmons, which is an interesting plot device on its own. Finally, there is the hunger for art in the middle of a wilderness. Holliday is a pianist and a lover of music, but has hardly anyone to talk to about great composers. He is a reader, and treasures his few novels by Dostoevsky, Dickens, and Virgil. Staying alive requires that he live in a place where good art can hardly ever be found. This greatly colors his relationship with Kate. In this version of events she is demanding and temperamental, but also the highly educated daughter of an ambassador to Mexico. She speaks several languages including Latin and Greek, and can quote from the classics. While this might not be an accurate history, it makes their relationship more poignant.

Don’t get me wrong, this book was very informative and eye-opening, but reading it was a little dull. Usually I don’t have trouble getting into books, but this one, I did. It may have been because it was more of a diary of Ehrenreich working the lowest income jobs for a month and then up and leaving to do the same thing, just in a different location. But this book did allow for me to get background on what is happening outside of this bubble we call Granville. It’s a harsh world out there and Ehrenreich goes out and expresses it in a book. Maybe it’s investigative journalism like this that will help us all realize what’s really going on under our noses everyday in big cities. Informative book, not really my favorite though.

Review posted at Amaterasu Reads A split second can change everything. One moment can alter your whole life. One decision can affect your future forever. For Laurel, that night she decided to stay home instead of going with her parents and her brother to get ice cream left her an orphan. David, their next door neighbor lost someone too. His mother died in the same accident and his dad, the one behind the wheel with Laurel's family, might never wake up. They both lost people they love, and even with that bitter, tragic connection between them, Laurel found herself falling for the one person she shouldn't. David. So what happens next? How do you deal with a loss so devastating it shatters your world? How do you get on with your life, knowing that all your loved ones died and you're still here? The Beginning of After is such a long book. Maybe it should be longer because some people take a whole lot more time to grieve, to accept, to heal. Each page of this book is a testament to Laurel's struggle to pick up the pieces of what was left of her life, to start anew, to get on living, even when the ones she loves aren't by her side anymore. It's a harrowing, excruciating, painful journey to "living". Laurel's struggles were heartfelt and it goes straight to the bone. It was difficult, to say the least. Her path to healing wasn't easy, and I love how Jennifer Castle wrote her. Going through denial and to acceptance is never easy. Anyone who has lost someone can definitely relate to Laurel. What's there to live for when all the ones you love are dead? It was worthwhile reading Laurel transform from being the orphan trying to make sense of her life after the tragedy to someone who lives not just because it's for her family, but for herself as well, taking charge of her life and making it her own. I'm sure Meg and Joe had their reasons why they don't like David, but I understood a bit why he's the way he is. I pity him because he never fully appreciated having a mother until she was gone, and he was torn whether to care for a father who made it a point to show him that he wasn't liked. The way David dealt with his loss was drastically different from Laurel's, but I guess grief changes people. It was a wake-up call for him, that it was time to grow up. Sometimes you have to get lost a couple of times before finally finding your way home, I think that's what best describes David and what he went through. It's not that I'm saying that David's feelings for Laurel weren't genuine. It was probably there ever since they were little, when they were still friends and spends time together a lot. But grief and loss can bring about certain emotions they weren't aware of, and it created a strong bond between Laurel and David. They understood each other in a way no one else can, because they both lost someone, and they knew dealing with it was never easy. In moments of uncertainty they turn to each other, fought, yelled, even blamed each other. And even though it's confusing how that relationship formed at first, they somehow became each other's anchor to pull through one of the hardest phases of their life, and through each other's pain and suffering they just realized how much they mean to each other. Masher is an adorable creature. He's the buffer between David and Laurel's grief. He also brought the two closer together in a lot of ways, connected David and Laurel in a more deeper level and most of all he made Laurel realize what she wants. Her brief stint with the animal hospital because of Masher made her realize that there are things to look forward to after her loss. The Beginning of After not only tackles the pain of Laurel and David, but even those of people around them. Nana was such a strong person, and she knew Laurel needed her to get through the tragedy. But Nana had to grieve too because she lost a grandson and Laurel's parents. That's got to be tough. Laurel was lucky to have a grandmother who was there for her when she needed a family. The novel also shows that despite Laurel's loss, life goes on. And that friendships can endure even while facing such difficulties, like what Laurel and Meg got through. I'd probably go crazy if I don't have friends like Meg, or even those like Andie, though they were only there for Laurel briefly. Joe didn't stand a chance against David. There were a lot of what ifs and what could have been in this book, Joe's relationship with Laurel is one of them. If I had my say on this novel I'd probably say that he and Laurel could have worked, but Laurel will always be after someone who doesn't just adore her because she's amazing, but someone who can fight with her and still understood her in the end. The Beginning of After is not an easy read. I have to say that the pace was very lethargic, but I ignored that and focused on what was written instead, and I got sucked into the story before I knew it. Sad but hopeful, filled with powerful emotions and lessons in life that we sometimes overlook, Jennifer Castle's debut is just wonderful. I connected with the novel in such an unexpected way and I just love it, I had tears in my eyes after I finished reading. Some people might not agree with me, but you have to give this book a chance. You never knew, you might like it like I did.
