I really loved the first 2/3s of this book and if the entire book had been written like the first 2/3s I would have given it five stars. The author did an amazing job capturing how children deal with parents, trauma, guilt, and friendship. The storyline is extremely compelling but I felt like it became very sappy and predictable at the end. It is worth a read if for no other reason than the first part of the book is great.

I like the setup of the story and I had high hopes for it all the way till the bitter end. Though the storyline was believable the ending didn't live up the rest of the book.

A book about addiction, a coming apocalyptic future where even the year is incorporated, AAA, and tennis. Read this book when you have lots of time.

I finished "Supper of the Lamb" while on a midnight BART train back to my apartment. What I enjoy most about this book is also what makes it tedious at times. Farrar's digressions can be illuminating, charming, or humorous, but at times they can get old. Still, I love his agrument that food helps us celebrate what's good about this earth and can keep us from falling into a dangerous materialism or a misguided gnosticism.

A young neuroscientist with a gripping narrative analyses how does the brain react to life-and-death situations and its decision-making process. The thesis is interesting, but the best is the way it is told. I liked how he picked up real-life examples to illustrate theory.

It's been ages since I've read my old love Dickens. This one was classic Dickens style -- written in short installments with cliffhanger endings, Victorian subject matter and pathos, a huge cast of memorable characters that keep popping up over the intricate course of the novel. I still love Dickens but not as much as I did in my 20s. My favorite parts are the comic -- he is SO amazing at describing comic scenes and characters. So I think The Pickwick Papers are still my favorite among his novels (oh wait, I love A Tale of Two Cities, too). I'm less touched than before by the idealized young women with infinite patience in tough circumstances -- possibly just because they seem so static and so similar among the novels (Nell in this book, Agnes in David Copperfield, Esther in Bleak House). But good always wins and the bad (who are so bad!) get what they deserve. I also love the atmosphere of the scenes -- Dickens describes so well these places and times long past. And I appreciate the social changes that came about from his descriptions of the conditions in debtor prisons, factories, and the lives of the poor.
