"Radioactive" is chock-full of fascinating facts about the Curies' professional and personal lives. Madame, her daughter Irene, and her granddaughter Helene are all revolutionary role models for little girls everywhere. Science isn't just for boys! The library categorizes this as Graphic Non-Fiction, but there is quite a bit of text. I wasn't sure I liked the illustrations at first. But the more I read, the more integral to the story they became. Be sure to read "A Note On Cyanotype Printing" on page 199 and you will definitely agree. Due to the subject matter, there is much talk about "glowing". I especially liked this quote by Douglas Hofstadter (p. 180), "no matter how much you absorb of another person, can you have absorbed so much of them that when that primary brain perishes, you can feel that that person did not totally perish from the earth . . . because they live on in a "second neural home"? . . . In the wake of a human being's death, what survives is a set of afterglows, some brighter and some dimmer, in the collective brains of those who were dearest to them . . . Though the primary brain has been eclipsed, there is, in those who remain . . . a collective corona that still glows."

Fantastic, although Mr. Rollins' mind was obviously somewhat twisted during some of these times. A snapshot of the early diy music days. These guys (Black Flag and friends) not only paved the road, they cut down the trees and made the asphalt from scratch.

Ok I had just written this long, good review about it and my computer crapped out. I'll simply say this: if you're into overly detailed, selfish accounts of a person who cares only about himself up until he makes a stupid mistake and his life changes, then read this. If you like mountaineering or adventure books, you may like this a lot more than I did. If you're simply curious, you can either watched the excellent film based on this story "127 Hours" which I thought was much more to the point of the accident Ralston had and what he learned; or you can read the last three to four chapters of this book. I'm not saying this book was not well written and interesting in some parts, but the end was where it had the most impact (and the least improperly used vocabulary and poetic language). It did actually bring me to tears at one point, but only briefly. The rest of this story just makes you wish you had the privilege of living a life as self-important as Ralston's. The redeeming quality here is that he appears to have actually learned a thing or two about the world after this happened to him. At least one can hope.

Shaun Tan is an immensely talented artist and author. This collection of three short stories is for all ages. Some of the images are haunting and filled with such detailed drawings that one could look at a page all day and find something new. I was super excited to see one of these short stories, The Lost Thing, recreated into a short film which earned several awards. Not to mention the movie was narrated by one of my most favorite performers: Tim Minchin! Who if you are not familiar with you should get familiar, because you are missing out.
