Good, challenging read. At some point, I lost the point of the book and struggled to pick up the author's point again.

I waited so long to read this that by the time I'd gotten it I'd seen/read/heard of so many food blogs made into books that it was a dud. I'm sure if I'd read it sooner I would have enjoyed it more.

I love Hemingway's writing style, but cannot stand characters like Lady Ashley...which probably explains my impatience and pity for Daisy in "The Great Gatsby"...they make all of my gender look bad.

I don't usually read memoirs, but this one was fascinating. It read like a fairy tale, romantic but also dark. The Chelsea Hotel becomes an enchanted forest and instead of good fairies, you get Allen Ginsberg and drag queens. What I found most interesting, though, was Smith's evolution as an artist. Even though I knew how it all ends, with fame and wealth, I found myself rooting for her and worrying for her over the course of the journey. She takes a lot of risks and gambles all for her dream. Smith's lack of cynicism and sharp perception fosters the art of the book. She picked the title "Just Kids" from a moment when she overhears someone pointing out her and Robert Mapplethorpe as possible artists, but the person's companion disagrees and says that they're just kids. It's a perfect summary of the story, and more than anything else, shows that Smith knows what she's doing as a writer.

A much more subtle and quiet side of Bronte comes through in this novel. It was an enchanting little read, but I don't believe it is for everyone. However, the scenes of violence with the young children and the beach scenes toward the end of the novel prove that Anne is worth a second look like Emily and Charlotte.

This modern retelling of Carmen is full of sultry sensuality, color, and rhythm. And uniquely from other adaptations of Carmen, it has a bittersweet coming-of-age young love theme layered into the mix. I loved how the author reworked Carmen to make the ending transformative, and I loved the affectionate look at the Miami Cuban culture. The author does an excellent job in portraying jealous, possessive attachment and the mixed response it can elicit. There is plenty of tension in this book, and plenty of heat. It is a paean to passion of all kinds. This book is YA, but not PG.

http://charlotteswebofbooks.blogspot.... I really, really enjoyed If This Is Paradise I Want My Money Back. Claudia Carroll has collected a fun, yet rag tag cast of characters with only one thing in common. Charlotte Grey. Charlotte was a fun character who truly believed that she was doing the best for all of those that she loved, in reality she was complicating things beyond belief. Her hysterical antics really made the book a fun read. The book is a light-hearted look at the "What If's" of the afterlife. A perfectly fluffy way to pass the day!

This is a stylistic gem. The opening chapters are memorable. But the story lacked Furst's usual strength--an ability to create a desolate atmosphere appropriate to the setting: 1930s Europe as it descends into the madness of war, gulags and concentration camps.

Great, non-boring character piece.
