Like J.K. Rowling before her, Suzanne Collins has crafted a compellingly entertaining novel, even if the concept is something we've seen before. Written in the tradition of The Running Man by way of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," readers will probably find they're turning the page almost in spite of themselves. That having been said, I still believe that Koushun Takami's Battle Royale is the superior novel.

An excellent read for all, but especially those in my field (speech pathology) or other special education related fields.

Must read book that beat Paper Towns. _____ Books don't get much better than this. It pulls at your heartstrings. The writing flows well and I could barely put it down. I miss the characters already, sad to say. I wish I'd read this book sooner, I've known about it forever. It definitely deserved its award.

This is the story of Adam. On the way to his Uncle's funeral, his twin sister Anna is abducted by a lunatic hell bent on setting off 12 nuclear bombs on Christmas Eve. Chaos then ensues as Adam hunts for Anna. In his quest he teams up with a church robbing mobster called Filbert and a Croatian clown called Cherry Sundae who appears to only speak Spanish. Along the way he meets all manner of weird and wonderful people, some who help and some who hinder him in his search for his sister. This was on the face of it a thriller, but it was irreverent and laugh out loud funny. Over the course of 6 days poor Adam goes through more drama than any sane person should. The trouble is he's an idiot and bad luck seems to follow him. That being said he is a loveable idiot. I loved the characters - all nutters the lot of them but I cared about what happened to them and where their stories took them. The pace of the book was brilliant and I could not put it down, eventually reading it in two sittings. The humour was spot on, and the thriller aspects were, well, thrilling! The ending was great, and felt right for the book. It was an enjoyable romp and I couldn't help but feel for Adam as he tried desperately to find his but being blocked at every turn. I recommend this for people who like their thrillers with a touch of humour. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review.

My dad recommended this book, and wouldn't STOP recommending it! It sounds like it is hilarious, witty, and writhing with personality.
Got this book in the library pretty recently. I hadn't even looked at the back and already started pushing it on kids. No one wanted to read it. So I brought it home. I devoured that thing like it was a piece of candy, went to Target and bought my own copy, along with the second and third books in the trilogy. I really liked the whole concept of becoming "pretty" on your 16th birthday...the concept of ugly vs. pretty....being ugly makes you smart and being pretty makes you brainless.....very intriguing.

This book was worth the hype! You join Amir as he reflects back on his life and childhood growing up in Afghanistan. I love how Amir is perfectly aware of his flaws - selfishness and cowardness being the big ones. I was so excited to figure out what was going to happen to him and his childhood friend, Hassan... really, it's not a very uplifting story, but it was lovely and well written nonetheless.

Won this book on a Goodreads giveaway and had also heard about it on CBC. A review in the Canadian Medical Association Journal says it all much more eloquently but this is a heartwrenchingly sad book about the authors disabled son and society's treatment of disabled people. Ultimately, the authors finds peace in his relationship with his son and this is very uplifting but you are left wondering about society's attitudes. You also feel guilty but relieved that your children do not have disabilities and that you have not had to face the difficulties that Ian Brown and his family and numerous other families have had to cope with. The book is beautifully written and I think Walker, the boy in the moon, will remain in my memory for a long time to come.
