This book was one of the most influencial books of my teenage years.

You know a book is good when you're sad because you've finished it. This book reminded me a lot of "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" as it's told from the eyes of a young girl and follows the Starkey family (as well as neighboring families) through 1920's Kansas. It was hard to put this book down (even at 1 a.m) and I found myself hoping there would be a sequel book someday.

This was a great book that I was hesitant to read at first, because the premise sounds so depressing! But even though the story contains a whole lot of death and mayhem, while you're reading it it's still enjoyable because the story focuses on the people who actually survive. So instead of a tragedy what you get is a story about triumph over hardship. The characters are well thought out and the emerging politics after the collapse of society is very interesting to follow. I'm almost definitely going to continue with the series.

Better than Atlas Shrugged, but only marginally.
So happy I finally got around to reading this book!

Three unlikely friends help each other cope with major changes in their lives.
I picked this book out of the new reads at the library on a whim. The story was good - held my attention enough to distract me from the torture of the stair mill at the gym and most of the pain of getting a tattoo - but the sex scenes were a bit excessive. OK book though and good story in between the steamy, overly descriptive sex scenes...

A fluffy book, read entirely on my way to / from Minneapolis, engrossing in a very non-deep way. Reads like a more literary People magazine. It gives an interesting perspective on the nature of obsession and friendship, I found the relationship between the narrator and her subject to be the most interesting.
I simply loved this book as being in the Pacific NW I could so imagine the whole story... i was very touched by the characters and it was a very quick but awesome read
