** spoiler alert ** I feel like I owe this book a nice, long, deep review discussing theme and character. But it might not get one. One thing people should know about me is that I hate traitors. Not only do I hate them, but I hate them in books. I think they are a bad cop out when the author can't figure out how to get the characters to the point they need to be at the end of the book. I hate them. So I almost started crying when Moody did his little traitor bit at the end there. Made me so mad. But then it was all okay, because it was actually Crouch Jr. So Rowling saved it, just in time. Two things I noticed that I can't decide if I liked or not: 1) it seems everything gets used twice. She's already used the Unregistered Animagus thing to get them out of one jam, and here it shows up again. The Polyjuice Potion (what is it with Crouches and the Polyjuice Potion) fixed one problem (and drove the entire middle section of the second book). I like that because it is possible to guess what is comming (possible, not probable...) TO BE CONTINUED...

Daughter of Smoke and Bone follows Karou, a girl who lives a double life, never quite feeling complete. I read it because I'd heard a lot about it and it was part of a book club, but honestly I finished reading this just waiting for something to happen. It all seemed too angsty and boring. None of the characters are remotely likeable and I found myself just skim reading at the end, hoping to catch what was happening rather than going through the pages and pages of drab 'explanation'. The author has dreamed up a world with a lot of little nuances, but honestly there doesn't have to been a lot of thought put into them. It's possible as the series progresses there will be more explanation, but for the course of this book it seems to point you in a direction loses and leave to go back to the main 'cliche' of a YA love story.
