This book was worth reading because it went more in depth of how they recruited her while she was in college.

This book is amazing! I love it. The problem in the book starts right from the beginning and every little part has some kind of interesting twist. I love Kathryn Lasky and this is one of my favourite books. I'd reccommend this to anybody who wants a good book.

Affluent aristocrats cavorted with the pansy proletariat. Flaming fairies, dressed to the nines, freely walked the rough and tumble streets of ethnic ghettos attracting attention to themselves and to their lifestyles. Music, liquor, and spectacle converged and hypnotized a diverse crowd of thousands at annual gay balls. Despite what the history books tell you (or rather do not tell you), this was the New York gay scene at the early twentieth century—at least, according to historian George Chauncey. Chauncey’s scholarly gem Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940 challenges every preconceived notion his readers may have had before picking up his text. Awarded numerous honors for its groundbreaking analysis of gay culture, Chauncey described an invigorated, self-sustained, persistent, and cosmopolitan gay culture at the turn of the century. His analysis begged the question, “If New York was so tolerant then, what happened?” He spends the majority of his 361 page text answering that question.

I'm amazed by how much I had forgotten! There was so much going on in this book and so many surprises by so many different characters! I feel like we learned a lot more about history and people's true sides in this installment. Riordan definitely left more panic at the end of this one compared to the others and I'm thrilled to dive right into book 5!

This was a fantastic read. A great book about books (and authors) for women. I had read eight out of the twelve authors/books that Erin Blakemore chose for her 'bookshelf' and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the authors and the insights into the heroines. I read these essays first. Then I went back and read the four sections on the authors/books I hadn't read (or actually even heard of!) I've now made a list of all the books and Erin's other recommendations for books to read that have similar heroine's to the choices on her bookshelf. I'll be working my way through all those books as well. I borrowed this book from the library on recommendation from my sister, who knows the author. I hadn't expected to like it so well. I've now requested my own copy for Christmas!

The title alone sparked my curiosity, but this book was also excerpted and strongly recommended in "Reading Like a Writer" as an example of great writing. And rightly so. I'm amazed at the way every word seems well-chosen, and by the fact that a book with such high-quality writing manages to be hysterically funny rather than stuffy and serious. The descriptions of Russian immigrants are so hysterical that I remembered some lines when I was running on the treadmill and started cracking up! People must have thought I was crazy. I've only read the first chapter, but as you can see I'm already really impressed; we'll see if I change my mind as the book progresses and I get a sense of the plot, but so far I'm bowled over by the writing and rolling with laughter. OK -- now that I've finished it -- I kind of agree with Tamar and Dani, although I still think the book had its merits. Basically, he's a good writer but it was way too long. I felt like much of it was overdone and superfluous. I wonder what I would have done as an editor to streamline this book, and I don't envy the editor who had that difficult job; however, some streamlining was definitely in order. I think it might have worked better as a novella.

Tearing through this book in a matter of six days (while working full time) i can easily say that this sordid tale of intrigue, deception, loyalty and love holds one of the most evil and mischevious female characters in literary history, Lady de Winter (otherwise known as Milady for first two-thirds of the book). The death and chaos that she leavs in the wake of her porcelain and dainty feet astounds the reader and makes you pray for vengence. I will say i was a little surprised at how the vengence was timed and what was allowed to take place before it, but it just goes to show some of the differences between todays writers and those of years past (about 150 years past to be exact). I personally loved this book and i will most likely find more by Dumas to devour with pleasure.
