This completely satisfied my need for adult books about magic. Very inventive and playful, but dark and serious at the same time. You must read The Magicians first to understand the context of this magical world. I can't imagine there won't be a third. For those who love HP, Narnia and Neil Gaiman.

Slow at the beginning and I really wasn't sure that I liked the book or the characters for most of the book, but in the end, I really did. It is a very human, very well crafted story that had some very unexpected themes - themes that were surprisingly relevant to my life.

I loved it. I love Hamlet, and this is a modern re-telling, so it was fun for me to make connections between the original story and this one. If you don't like Hamlet, you will not like this book.

Perhaps I thought less of this book because I read Graham Swift's amazing _Waterland_ first--which isn't fair criticism! This is Swift's first novel, and although it's not as polished as _Waterland_, you can see him developing the themes that intrigue him: lost communication between parents and children, the intricacies of marriage, and of course History.

The city now called Thessaloniki already had me completely fascinated before I read this book. I'd visited once in 1994 and still dream of going back. When I do make it there again, it will be a hundred times more interesting to me for having read this book. The subtitle "City of Ghosts" will feel especially apt if you ever go there to experience the modern, thoroughly Greek, city, and consider that until the 20th century it was hardly Greek at all. A cosmopolitan mix of religion and nationality that bears little relation to what one sees now. You'd have been as likely to hear Spanish or Ladhino on the street as you would Greek, or maybe Turkish. The book is readable and fascinating throughout, with some great pics. I had the wildly unexpected pleasure of meeting the author (and his charming Egyptian wife, also a scholar) at a party in Boston. A nice, normal guy, in case an author's niceness matters to you.

You never fall as hard as you fall at 17, and Aciman's novel of first love is completely beautiful and completely familiar, despite the fact that the main character and the object of his affection/obsession are the same sex. Elio has grown up in an idyllic Italian town, where his professor father routinely hosts young scholars for the summer. The summer of Elio's 17th year, the scholar is the gorgeous Oliver, who throws Elio's emotions (and hormones) into a whirl. This book is so gorgeously written and its main character so sympathetically drawn that it should appeal to anyone, gay or straight, who ever crushed hard.

if there is one thing that poe brings to his audience it is a powerful voice. his pacing is sometimes lyrical. but since i was raised by the simpsons... i picture bart as the raven... todo el tiempo.

Audio more like a short story about a high school football coach and the players. maybe Saturday Nights Lights was a spin off of this book.
