Best in the trilogy, by far.

I read this some years ago, so the details are fuzzy, but I enjoyed it cover to cover. Inspired me to research info about the Golem of Prague legend. Will add it my re-read shelf.

This is an eminently readable piece of historical fiction involving an American woman, a well to do lady living in Manhattan, who gets caught up in the early storm of the American Revolution. The story moves at a brisk pace and accurately reflects life at that time. It opens a window onto the rupture in American society that resulted from the war and introduces us to ordinary citizens as well as Founding Fathers. Race relations and class relations are realistically portrayed. However, the real value of the book is in its depiction of the medicine of the time and the horrors of the infirmary tents. While the prose is sometimes a bit overworked, the characters are well drawn and the story moves along with force. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in colonial history and especially those wanting to learn about camp life in the Revolutionary army. Gregg S. Pressman MD, FACC, FASE

This is a book that encourages deep thinking; it's impossible to not put yourself in the position of the main characters. The book's set in modern day Stockholm when madly oppressive weather is broken by a huge electrical storm after which the recently dead come back to life again. As horrific as this sounds it's not a zombie book, the re-animated dead don't want brains, they just shuffle back to where their lives left off. And it's dealing with this that gives the book its title; imagine your horribly ill grandad has finally shuffled off this mortal coil and in doing so has finally got peace, and suddenly you've got to deal with him sat back in front of the telly in the lounge. I'm not going to reveal the storylines here, and, from memory, there are four, each told about a different resurection, a different death, a different family's grief and sorrow that what's come back is nothing like what was lost. There's also trouble as the authorities have to deal with the hygiene aspects of deteriorating dead while the bereaved can't handle seeing the dead treated as a problem that has to be got rid of. If you've read Lindqvist's 'Let The Right One In' you'll already know that he can paint a chilling scene with words, that he writes characters you'll like, dislike and not give a toss about in equal measure, and that if you wanted a happy ending he saw you coming, and decided to spoil your day anyway.

I loved this book! It's a great recent science fiction with a strong female lead. The first book is the best in the trilogy. I can't wait to see the movie next year.

Just finished "Midnight Riot" (I wish they had kept the UK title) two days ago, burned through this one in a day and a half, and am eagerly waiting for more. Basically, this is more of the same from "Midnight Riot" but even more so. Keep 'em coming!

Excelent reference book!
#2 in the Bess Crawford series Charles Todd is beginning to flesh out his main character, Bess Crawford, in a satisfactory manner. I enjoy her as well as the setting (WWI London) and was intrigued by the intricate family elements in this mystery. I look forward to more books in this series.
Whew! What an amazing book. Like Les Miserables, it takes on the question of morals and responsibility for one's actions and makes you squirm. It's long, but worth the investment. Hardly a week goes by when I don't think of it.

First of all I would like to thank my professor for making me buy this "gem". This is a collection of short stories by fanz kafka. It is an expensive little book but just the most wonderful little thing. I have read one short story out of it. You have to enjoy Franz Kafka's writing in order to appreciate this book.
