As a teacher and a reader, I adore Walter Dean Myers if nothing else than for his ability to reach kids who claim not to be readers. Of all the books that I've read of his so far, though, this is my favorite. His son did the illustrations that accompany the story, and both are very well done. If I didn't love it when I read it myself, I truly fell for it when I saw one of my class clowns who takes A LOT of motivation to get him to participate take it off my desk, sneak it back to his seat, and continue to read it for the entire day (including while he walked in the hallway and during his lunch period)!

The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids was a compelling novel that really broadened my view of the things that high school students go through. This work of nonfiction was amazingly mind expanding. Alexandra Robbins, with the help of her journalism skills, brought fourth an unseen world of insane students who will do anything to gain admittance to the schools of their choice. The highly addictive book is impossible to put down. The plot consists of nine students stories. AP Frank, a student who feels immense pressure from his parents to succeed. Julie, a high school senior who is a track star that is afraid of the choices she makes. Sam, a senior who is scarred that all his work will never pay off. Audrey, a junior who is obsessed with being perfect. C.J., who is perceived as the flirt. Pete, he is perceived as “the meathead.” Taylor, who is perceived as the popular one. Ryland, who is the school slacker. Finally, there is “Stealth,” a student who likes to lay low and keep to himself. He is described as “being under the radar.” All of these students undergo different challenges in their schooling careers and find ways around them all. However, in some cases, they are driven into depression, resentment, and some are pushed to the brink of suicide, all because of all the stress and pressure. Some of the pressure comes from parents, some from teachers, coaches, but a lot comes from the student them self. Robbins explains some of the problems found in schools today. Cheating and study habits, the over testing of students, sports rage, a drug market for studying, and the inane college admission processes that students have to undergo. Robbins uncovers many secrets and horrible truths that exist in schools all around the nation. In the book, there is a multitude of conflicts that exist, man versus man, man versus society, and man versus himself. Robbins uses the journalistic writing style and injects her own opinion and facts into the writing, which betters the readers understanding of the events that are taking place. This book was very well written with a smooth flowing writing style that was appeasing to the mind. I enjoyed the book and it helped me realize that my schooling is not nearly as stressful as some other students are. It made me feel inferior to the students that were written about, but also led me to realize that I am glad to not be in their situations. I recommend that students, teachers, and parents read this book, so they all may understand how much students actually go through in school, the things they hide, and the actions they take to get where they want to be. It would help enhance the understanding that everyone has of each other and their lives.

An enjoyable start to the Mortal Instruments trilogy. All of the characters were enjoyable enough, though none were particularly developed. The relationship between Clary and Jace seemed a bit forced to me, as I didn't see where the affection actually started. And normally Simon is the character I would root for (the equivalent of Seth in Marr's Wicked Lovely), but I honestly didn't feel there was enough there for me to care about. I would have liked more story on Alec and Isabelle, but maybe that's to come in the next books. The twist at the end was interesting, and yet oddly glossed over. This and one other character reveal are two topics not always addressed in YA books, but she didn't seem to do much with either. Again, I guess I'll have to see if they're addressed more in the other books. Overall, I enjoyed the story and am optimistic that the series will continue to improve.

I don't read much nonfiction. But I was intrigued by the NY Times review of this book and so tried it. I read it almost as voraciously as I do good fiction. For anyone wondering why Americans suffer from an obesity problem, this book offers some insights. For anyone interested in seeing behind the Whole Foods "organic" label, this book should be read. I personally will never buy "cheap" eggs again and will always wonder whether it makes any difference to buy the expensive, organic, "free range" eggs.

You'll have to excuse the over-simplified plots and dialogue. This is Fantastic Four in their larva stage. Sue Richards is a helpless, brainless damsel at this point. Doom isn't half as complicated and interesting as he becomes in later comics, but stil there is some good stuff here, including Jack Kirby's artwork. Reading this is kind of looking at baby pictures of your hot girlfriend and seeing that she was once a fat, immobile blob, but having seen her origins helps you better understand and appreciate what she is now.

What amazed me most about this book is how fast-paced it feels. It's long, but there's so much tension that builds so well, I flew threw it. Especially impressive considering that the events only span a few days. Winterland has a wide array of fascinating characters. Especially recommended for folks who like a bit of political intrigue in their crime fiction. The depictions of modern Ireland and its government were fascinating. The subject matter and political bent reminded me a lot of In This Rain, but this one was at once more wide-ranging and more coherent. Ambitious and excellent.
