I. Read a lot of free books, and lately have been wondering if there is actually a cost associated with getting a book for free. Many other reviewers have complained about the lack of editing, but really, if a writer gives his work away, how is he supposed to pay a professional editor and proofreader? Those services are not cheap, and when I get an indie book for free I expect there to be some typos and such. In this case it really wasn't that bad - I've seen much worse! One of the interesting aspects of Haven is that there ARE so many unanswered questions - another complaint I saw mentioned several times. You aren't supposed to know exactly what's going on. None of the characters really know what's going on, and everything is a bit murky for everyone, everywhere, above and below ground, human and....half human? Partially human? Barely human? If you approach this story like you would a blockbuster action movie and expect only to be entertained, then you might like it. I really liked that it was a fully developed story. The characters are complete, and while it ends on a sort of cliffhanger note (there is a sequel, after all), it moves through a whole story. Many times free books read like first drafts and whole pieces of the story are weak. One criticism is that the character of Kaylee is a little inconsistent. At times she is tough and has no trouble killing the bad guy and is prepared to kill anyone else who messes with her, but then at other times screams and is queasy about corpses. I'm sure there are other, similar problems but for me they didn't take away from enjoying the story.

I appreciated all the insider-y Baltimore references and attention to local detail, but was not impressed by the mystery, which was too predictable for most of the running, then threw in a last minute twist that I did not buy at all. How much mileage you get out of the book seems to depend strongly on how much you enjoy the character of Tess Monaghan. I definitely see her appeal as a sarcastic, independent, slightly neurotic Everywoman detective, but some of the dialogue and romantic concerns made my eyes roll. Even though I didn't really enjoy this book and doubt I'll continue this series, there was enough interesting stuff here that I am still interested to try one of Lippman's stand-alone novels.

This book has a lot to say about family, but the most important aspect of the book to me is the history encased within. I compare this, a little bit, to the Little House on the Prairie books. Life certainly was different and more or less difficult in many ways that it was on the prairie. There was a harshness to the life of immigrants or even those who were second generation Americans living in Brooklyn that did not seem to accompany the stories I have read about pioneers. Nevertheless, a girl grows from babyhood to childhood to adolescence to young adult in this realm. Due to the foresight of her mother, who never loved Francie as she did Neeley, she succeeds beyond what seems possible. I recommend this book as it contains a period of history I hadn't encountered before. It contains similarities to The Jungle, but without the extreme horrors of life in the Chicago tenements. I would be remiss if I did not mention that there were exactly three quotes from this book that were almost completely transcendent to me as I read them. Artful. I should type them here, but it's late.

"Juliet" is a story of everlasting and immortal love of Romeo and Juliette, but not as in Shakespeare’s tale. This is a a story within a story novel, the narrative switches between present day and the middle ages in 1340. Romance( in great amounts), mystery, history, treasure hunts, curses, suspense, adventure - all set in glorious Italy, in Siena (not Verona!).There are so many deceptive twists and turns in this entertaining novel, it's definitely a page-turner, and that is the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3(too many stereotypical and naive characters, unbelievable events in present day, strange "reincarnation" – thing, too many "coincidences", several characters with the same names, bizarre happenings at the ending …). But, the history of medieval Siena, interesting premise, entertaining, imaginative storyline, the way chapters alternating between past and present... all that and more - so enchanting! Once I've started, I couldn't put it down!!!! Maybe it is not really a great literature, but I liked this beautiful, refreshing and enjoyable story.

I read all of the Archer books some thirty-five years ago, and since then I have been under the impression that none of the books until The Galton Case was worthy of attention. I was wrong. True, The Moving Target (Archer #1) lacks a family tragedy with haunted children that is the hallmark of later Archer, and it also lacks a disciplined series of images--both in metaphor and in the visuals evoked by the narrative--that carry us to the heart of the classic Archer tale. Still, there's enough here to make it worth your while. The fringes of Hollywood are handled with flair (a sleazy piano bar with B-girls and a coke-head soloist, plus a has-been actress--and former S&M club mistress of ceremonies--turned astrologer/grifter), Archer's narrative voice is spare, elegant and already close to perfect, the imagery is precise, and the picture of a money-obsessed Southern California society living off the energy of countless anonymous Mexicans and Filipinos is very well done. I thought the first and last part of the book were better than the middle (which relies a little too much on cliches of the genre), but this is still the work of a fine genre writer, well on his way to becoming a master.

Som tidligere nævnt er dette min anden læste "brev roman" eller hvad man nu skal kalde det, den anden hed "Alice i Cyberland" af Astroteller (en samling E-mails), og den var heller ikke dårlig. Det er i grunden utroligt hvor meget man kan få ud af sådan en stak papirer der ikke beskriver en egentlig handling, men tanker, og derigennem tilstande, følelser og somend også handling alligevel. Jeg er altid skeptisk når jeg griber en "virkelig" bog - noget så realistisk at jeg i princippet selv kunne have oplevet det, sikkert fordi jeg frygter at eskapismen ikke vil blive fuldend fordi jeg NETOP ligeså godt kunne gå ud i mit eget liv og opleve det selv. Jeg tvivler dog på nogen ville læse mit livs roman, for der sker ikke nær så mange omvetlninger som Rosie skal i gennem, den stakkels knokkelsommelige kvinde. Denne boge har bestemt ikke været en skuffelse, det har klaret sig langt over min forventning (der som sagt ikke var særlig høj). Det er en sød bog som flere gange giver en grund til at knibe en lille tårer, og der er så mange fantastiske stæder med små jokes, og fantastisk sarkasme der gør at min ikke kan undlade at udstøde en lille latter. God bog. Skulle jeg gøre det om med den viden jeg nu har, havde jeg helt sikkert læst den igen ^^
