I can't force myself to finish reading this. After waiting years for this book to come out, I am extremely disappointed. Nothing in the book seems to just flow, everything feels forced. Kenneth Johnson was amazing as the writer of the original V: The Miniseries screenplay, but it seems the transition to novel writer failed for him.

This book is about two young teens who are stranded naked somewhere by other campers at their camp. I don't remember if they then try to get back to camp or if they try to hide out and skip the rest of camp because they were picked on so much; I think its more of the second one. It was an interesting story and it kept me entertained when I read it in middle school. I'm pretty sure I chose to read it because our librarian told us about it.

** spoiler alert ** For book club 4/16/09 at HS Quick Thoughts WITH SPOILERS? At first, I wasnt' sure I would like the main character - I was really getting miffed at how she was treating her youngest dot in the opening scenes but the author was able to make a very sympathetic protagonist and the swift decline was startling. Alice's children though not a big part of the story were authentically portrayed even if they did all fall into expected categories. The husband (or was it his behavior?) was hard to like and that is also part of the reality of this sad story, I imagine! He really had to wrestle with his emotions and as tough as it is for the victim of Alz., the caregiver role has to be beyond challenging (and thus the more support resources!) Yes, I cried. I didn't take a ton of notes but I am inspired to read Moby Dick now! (It's been on my list.) Scary disease, Lisa Genova did an excellent job with this novel. If you are familiar with the Boston/Harvard settings and enjoy recognizing such in books, this story might delight you in the descriptions of landmarks and landscapes. Seasons, too. I can't wait to ask about the Butterfly scene near the end!!! and I was shocked - I noted it- when she actually attended on of her own lectures as a student and then left because the instructor never shows! too funny. Again, Genova did an excellent job setting scenes and situations. If they ever make a movie? Julianne Moore? Someone that would be able to present that tough ambition and an identity wrapped up in being a Harvard Prof. I can't seem to think of a good actor to play the hub.... Attended Author Event in Chatham 4/15 Loaned to Kathy but her dog ate it so she bought be a new copy alas unsigned. which I gave to Leslie via Jimmi

Much harder to read the true story...
Centered on the dissidents, pacifists, and conscious objectors of World War One, the author creates a easy read story of people with courage and foresight. Since he keeps a tight focus, this is not a comprehsive story of the war nor of its opponeents but rather a certain group of British individuals. A good read.

I will quote James Gould Cozzens here on F. Scott Fitzgerald gift for writing: " a talent for saying not merely the right, the apt, the vivid, or moving thing, but the thing which, having all those qualities, so far transcends your reasonable expectation that you see that it couldn't have been done merely by intelligence, or training, or hard trying, and must simply have been born in a sort of triumphant flash outside the ordinary process of thought".

Not nearly as good as "Little Big Man," but I had to read it when I found out it existed, since LBM is a very good book and also one of my all-time favorite movies. The sequel book spends a great deal of time detailing Jack Crabb's adventures with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show, which frankly isn't all that interesting. Much less time spent on interesting characters, including Native Americans. The switching back and forth from white to Indian cultures was the first book greatest strength but is lacking here.
