I was really kind of disappointed in this book. While there wasn't a lot of fuzzy orbs, there were some things that were obviously photoshopped. But at least the authors presented them in a way where it was left for the reader to decide if they were real or not, rather than presenting them as gospel.

I always avoid Anne Tyler's books because the covers make them look like fluffy reading, when in fact she's an accomplished author (Accidental Tourist, anyone?) who draws rich characters and compelling, offbeat story lines. I enjoyed the first book of her that I picked up on a whim, Back When We Were Grownups, and this one was even better. She has a way of making ordinary people charming and amusing, and I always finish her books wishing I could keep getting to know her characters. I definitely plan to seek out more of her books now -- and, luckily for me, her books are usually plentiful at the library book sales, which is where I buy 99% of my reading material.

Enjoyed this book more than the first one. However, the ending was no ending. Now I have to read the third book to get resolution

Every Other Day was my first book by author Jennifer Lynn Barnes and it was right up my street. It was intense, fast paced, exciting and with a kick-ass heroine, trying to overcome a dangerous evil within her home town….what’s not to like? Kali is a 16 year old high student by day and every 24 hours she turns into a bad ass demon hunter by night. While at school one day, she notices a mark on the back of one of the popular girls and realises that the girl has been marked to die. Kali makes it her mission to try and help the girl but instead, she ends up with the mark on herself and is soon on a mission to save herself before her time is up. I liked the overall premise of this story and it was an easy read. I really found myself enjoying the characters too. Kali is just the type of heroine we need from young adult books. She’s a very interesting character, one that is strong, stubborn and sarcastic but she’s also loyal, determined and her personality really drives this story forward – it really gets this story kicking off pretty well. Kali wasn’t the only character I liked; Skylar was another favourite of mine. I loved her personality and her bubbly attitude and I loved the banter between her and her brother. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed Every Other Day,, I cannot help feel that something was missing and for me that was romance. There is a slight hint of it between Kali and Zev but it’s such a weird and complex relationship I wasn’t entirely sure I understood it. So I didn’t love it but that’s not to say that the next book will be the same. The ending of this book left me wanting to know what happens next and I especially want to know happens to all our characters and of course, I want more romance. Overall, Jennifer Lynn Barnes has managed to create an interesting and imaginable world with Every Other Day and I’ve got a feeling that this series will just get better and better.

Skimmed this book and it was very nice. It's old. I'm interested in calligraphy and decided to check this out for composition.

The only reason I didn't rate this book higher was I felt style trumped substance; I could almost feel the author straining to use the language of Jane Eyre, (one of my favorite books that is referred to over and over in this book) and others of that ilk and era. However, having said that, it's a real page-turner and I did enjoy reading it!

Having never read Rebecca I am probably not going to be the best judge on how well this works as a retelling, but what I can tell you is that I really enjoyed reading it. I loved Harbison's debut, Here Lie's Bridget, when I read it last year and New Girl has all the same elements I enjoyed in it's predecessor. She really knows how to get into the heads of her characters, and while I may not always find all of them likeable, they are complex enough that I can't help but want to know more about them. It took me almost until I was half-way through the novel to realise I did not know the name of New Girl. In fact, it is not until the very end that we actually learn that particular detail. But I did really like her and I felt really sorry for her too. I think even the strongest of people would have found that situation hard to deal with. But I really liked the fact she learns to stand up for herself. I really liked Max too. He seemed sweet and there was just something about him. And I liked the scenes between him and New Girl. I'm not sure I would have paired him and Becca together though. Becca was the second narrator of the story (with her parts being told in third person). She is the character that I found myself disliking but also feeling for. I love the way the author manages to walk that line between having a character I dislike but one I'm interested in reading about too. It's as if I couldn't stop myself from reading more about her - even when I had the feeling nothing good was going to happen. I really liked the ending too. I wasn't surprised by it necessarily - some things were easy to work out and predict - but I liked the way it ended for New Girl. I'm looking forward to whatever Paige Harbison writes next - I'm sure it will be a winner.

Okay stories. Kind of dark fairty tales. Nothing to write home about. It's a quick read.

Not a very pretty picture of some of the Kennedys, especially Rose. This was an enjoyable read, but not a particulary happy one.
