I've tried to get lost in the Maximus Poems a great number of times. Olson's irascibility, his reputation, Gloucester Massachusetts, the peculiar shorthanded grammar, the evocative mythology, the blue-collar immediacy-- it all adds up, I think, to the ultimate work of literature for me. But, I just get flummoxed. Fascinated, exhiliarated, but flummoxed all the same. So, I'm about to embark on reading about Olson rather than reading his work itself. I'm hoping to be hooked and gain some insight I can apply to another attempt at Mount Maximus.

Notes from my iphone: You can definitely hear the journalist in Krakauer. His writing is compelling and even funny (I like the anecdote about the holy man who was excited to show his American vacation pics while he was worried about showing offense because of his ignorance of their religion) as well as informative, but I often felt that he used big words unnecessarily (using "apprehend" when "see" really would've been just as, if not more appropriate) and that would probably alienate a few readers. I felt that Krakauer sounded very self aware throughout the novel. I appreciated that he referred to himself as not really being qualified to be out there despite his background in mountain climbing. Nothing about mountain climbing itself sounds pleasant. No one seems to be having a good time and I'm not really having a good time reading it! It sounds like hell and by Krakauer's own admission, you are so miserable for most of the experience that you can't even really appreciate it when you reach the summit! And I already know that a lot of people are going to die before the end! This book is so uncomfortable at times that it's a little trippy. Very moving, very sad. I see where the criticism was coming from, but as a journalist, his entire intention in going was to document it, and writing is obviously also his coping method as an individual. The more he tried to justify mountain climbing, the more ridiculous it seemed. I didn't think it felt judgy at all. If anything, it seemed as if he understood where they were coming from on a human level. I thought his empathy was astounding. He acknowledged aspects of pride, money, future planning, hypoxia, weather conditions, and finally admitted that they could never truly know what happened in the minds of the individuals who were lost. Yeah, he laid in camp and didn't try to help anyone else to safety but that wasn't his job, and he likely would've died in the process. He made a mistake regarding Harris which he readily admitted and everyone was near death! Extenuating circumstances, imo. I finished this book late at night/early in the morning and it left me feeling really unsettled for bed.

Excellent historical overview of electricity. I leared Turing (essentially the founder of modern computers) was gay and committed suicide by eating a cyanide-laced poisonous apple just like in Snow White! It wasn't too technical....both a positive and a negative!

Loved this book sooo much!! Truly amazing! Can't wait for the next book!
Good love story, easy reading. Highly recommend.
Disturbing.... Not something to read before bed. A cunning killer disguised as a world re-knowned artist uses actual families as his subjects. Pretty hard stuff.....

I hope there's a sequel here! Because the ending wasn't satisfying and felt incomplete

I read this book ages ago but just stumbled upon an audio version of it for only $5 so I picked it up. The language is fantastic, and so far, so is the reader. I barely remember anything that happened in this book from my first time around, but I kind of love what I've listened to so far... ...Okay, I finished listening to this book on my way home from work tonight. It's very interesting to me that when I read this book, it earned 3 stars, but when I listened to it, it was a higher rating. In fact, the first two sections of the book I would rate as high as 5 stars, with the last section earning 4, for an overall of 4. I'm so glad that I encountered this book again.
