Great read. I don't think that you necessarily need to have read the rest of the Otherwold books to jump into this one and be engaged by it and that's the beauty of Robyn being a main character for those who don't know much or anything about the supernatural world in Armstrong's books. Having multiple protagonists works so well, I got a lot of the insider jokes from Hope and Karl but had I known nothing about any of it Finn and Robyn would have given me that outsiders view and learning curve that I needed. I feel like Armstrong is really propelling the whole series somewhere and the last chapter really compounded that for me which left me feeling really exhilarated by the time I closed it. That said, it's still a great stand alone novel in its own right. As always the pace is great, the dialogue is sharp and clean with enough humour to perk the story up in places and enough drama and action to get your heart beating. Obviously I'm a fan haha, so I'm probably gushing, but I really enjoyed this book.

I really enjoyed this. Shelock as it turns out didn't die in Riechenbach Falls. I was never particularly iterested in Tibet, Nepal or the Himmalayas before, but this book took me there and I really enjoyed the trip. It is an able tale in the continuation of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

** spoiler alert ** (I recently re-read this book for my book club.) My first reading of the book almost 10 years ago was a complete delight…and a crushing experience. Ha! No, seriously, the book is *sad* and I remember feeling nearly bereft at the fate of the characters and at not being able to have them in my life for longer despite the great length of the book. This time around, because I anticipated so much misfortune but couldn’t remember the specific details (with the exception of a few key moments in the book), I was almost relieved that all the potentially horrible moments in the book didn’t necessarily turn out as I feared they would as I read. That is, the characters careened toward the brink over and over but fate managed to put the brakes on, averting disaster at the last moment. For that reason, I think I was able to appreciate the small joys and happy moments even more than the first time around. Overall, the book portrayed despair and disappointment, but there were precious moments of hope and gladness as well, and I especially enjoyed that the characters were able to appreciate those moments, too. This time, as with the first, I fell in love with the characters’ humor and quirks; despite the profound sadness of so much of it, I laughed aloud repeatedly. At the end, the ones who were worst off were still able to hang onto that joy unlike one in particular who despite his relative comfort couldn’t deal with life and gave up. I thought these two passages were key: “Then what did you do?” “What can anyone do in such circumstances? Accept it, and go on. Please always remember, the secret of survival is to embrace change, and to adapt. To quote: “All things fall and are built again, and those that build them again are gay.’” “Yeats?” guessed Maneck The proofreader nodded, “You see, you cannot draw lines and compartments, and refuse to budge beyond them. Sometimes you have to use your failures as stepping-stones to success. You have to maintain a fine balance between hope and despair.” He paused, considering what he had just said. “Yes,” he repeated. “In the end, it’s all a question of balance.” (A Fine Balance, pp. 228-29) ----------- He rearranged his hand, discarded a card face-down and announced, “Rummy!” After presenting his completed sequences, he analysed the errors others had made. “You should never have thrown away the knave of hearts,” he told Dina. “That’s why you lost.” “I took a chance.” He gathered up the cards and started shuffling. “Okay, whose deal is it?” “Mine,” said Dina, and accepted the deck. گراهام گرین یکی از نویسندگانی ست که در زبان فارسی از لحاظ شرایط و مترجم گرفتار بدشانسی شده و آن گونه که شایسته اش بوده، به خواننده ی فارسی زبان معرفی نشده. به عنوان مثال دو اثرش "مرد دهم" و "وزارت ترس" با نثر سنگین مترجم صاحب نامی چون پرویز داریوش به فارسی برگردانده شده که از زبان گراهام گرین فاصله ی بسیار دارد. برای شناخت شخصیت و آثار گراهام گرین، "مردی دیگر" اثر "ماری فرانسواز آلن"، توصیفی ست چند بعدی و گویا؛ مصاحبه ای روان شناختی در شناساندن نویسنده ای پیچیده و افسونگر. گویا این کتاب را خانم فرزانه ی طاهری به فارسی برگردانده. این برگردان را ندیده ام اما خواندن توام با دقت کتاب را به علاقمندان توصیه می کنم.

From Midnight Children on, seems that Roshdie’s preference moves tward the language rather than the narration itself. Comparing ”The ground beneath of her feet” and ”Midnight children” one comes to a more beautiful language but less interesting events. در اثار رشدی زبان از زیبایی خارق العاده ای برخوردار است. واژه هایی که رشدی در زبان انگلیسی ابداع می کند و عمدتن مخلوطی از انگلیسی هندی- بریتانیایی ست، گاه به توجیه صحنه، عمل یا شخصیت در روایت کمک شایانی می کند. بسیاری از واژه های ابداعی رشدی در انکلیسی بریتانیای امروز به راحتی جا افتاده و معمول شده است. در "زمین زیر پای او(زن)" آن چنان که در "بچه های نیمه شب" و "شرم" دیده ایم، داستان دیگر به اندازه ی فضا سازی و بیان منظور از اهمیت بالایی برخوردار نیست.
