This book was so incredibly beautifully written, I almost wish I hadn't watched the movie first, because the movie was so dead on. Barring the choices of who played Cee and Robbie, not that Knightly and McAvoy aren't good actors, but Robbie's supposed to be very big and strong, McAvoy, is kind of slender. But that didn't bother me as much as Knightly, she's supposed to be beautiful but horse-faced...not quite pictureing Knightly for that. So because the movie and book were almost identical everytime I read a sentence of beautiful imagery prosed by McEwan, I pictured a scene from the movie, whether or not that's a good thing or bad thing I can't tell. I can't decide if I like the book better or the movie better. It was tough because I knew exactly what was going to happen as I read the book, but you know what, still by the end of part one I was in tears. When Robbie's mom is screaming "liars, LIARS!" it got to me, it was so heart breaking. I have a couple of quotes dog-earred in my book, but I'm at work now so I'll add them later.

I didn't like this as much as the author's first book, but it's still a very fun read. It takes place in a Medieval/Renaissance sort of world, only with magic. But magic has been forbidden by the current government, which claims it is in opposition to the true religion (there is a group of people who go around looking for traitors and those with magic -- it's an inherent power, not something you just study -- who seem remarkably like the inquisition). There are some who want to change how society views magic, but that can be a dangerous place to be. Especially when you're trying to keep the fact that you're actually a thief a secret.

Let’s talk about love triangles for a moment: I am really not a fan of them. If they’re handled well, then fine, I can stomach them. However, the trend in a lot of romances and young adult (especially in recent years) is to shove two guys into the reader’s face, with a clear favorite and use that as ~drama~. And that I cannot stand. Which brings us to Darkest Hour. While the first two books did have a slight love triangle subplot (in the form of guy crushes on Suze, ends up being driven away due to her position as a mediator; book 3 had a different situation), this book sets up the main arc for the second half of the series with Paul. Again, the biggest problem I have in this is that Carmel always turns out to be Mediator City, USA when we learn that Jack (and later, his brother) are both mediators. (Again, how did Suze not know about anyone else in Manhattan who had the same powers? I can understand her not wanting to talk about it, but still, I find it very doubtful.) The one thing I enjoyed about this is Jesse’s backstory, and how we learn more about his short life. I liked that he gets some sense of closure, even if he doesn’t end up leaving the mortal realm. However, Paul is a really undeveloped character, and using him as an antagonist in this does come out of left field. It feels more like a filler book than the previous two entries, even though a lot of plot points are set up in here.

YIKES. I began to wonder if I would ever finish this book. It was tedious and tiresome. The characters were distant, full of human frailties, obnoxious, perverse and extremely self-centered. AND there's sex.. so one would think this would be an interesting book instead of a yawn. Until two-thirds of the way into the book,the author 'seems to' compare his character's lives with democracy. The vigor and brightness and promise in the beginning gives way to poor choices, complications. Poor choices lead to incompetence, perversity and hypocrisy. Then shame and humiliation. But the end of the book shows no tie to that democracy analogy (so maybe I'm completely wrong on this). During the incompetence/perversity/hypocrisy, BUSH/CHENEY were in leading us into Iraq with KBR (he has other initials for his company). Toward the end of the book, when shame and introspection and humiliation are going on, Obama is in. I'm just left scratching my head on this one.
