I know you've all read this but I need to give it a public 5 stars because Rob informed me recently that he's never really liked Eeyore all that much. For shame!
Fast 20 Jahre lebt John Doyle nun in Deutschland.

re read june 2nd 2011 loved it! I've been reading so many of these - the Anita Blake world feels real. I'm disappointed when I remember its all just a fantasy. I love this author for that.

This book is on the list of books I go back to again and again. I notice most of the books I do that with are books with strong women characters and I read them when I need what those women have to impart to me through their story. The Good Earth Little Women Jane Eyre MOST ANY Margaret Atwood book...lol Zora Neale Hurston makes me fall in love with reading all over again EVERY TIME I read her! Their Eyes Were Watching God is a treasure and a gift!
When you listen to the news, you get the idea that the U.S. is the only place where there is racial discrimination, that the rest of the world and especially Europe is much more tolerant and open-minded. Not so. In Andrea Levy's Small Island, a Jamaican couple immigrates to London just after WW II in search of a better life, only to find virtually all doors closed to them. The only room Gilbert is able to rent is a shabby bedroom in a white woman's house, only because he resembles someone she knew during the war. His wife Hortense graduated from teacher's college in Jamaica but is told she is unqualified to teach in England. The novel switches point of view as each character tells his/her own story, and the life stories of Gilbert and Hortense are intertwined with the stories of their landlady and her husband.

Another great story from this author! I loved how she had the two POVs in the book both Hope and Lucas' it made for a great read. It made me feel kind of bad for the Jaz character though.

A fun easy read that dealt with important topics like the abuse of women and the plight of those unable to fend for themselves. I adored Catherine's courage and I felt deeply for her friend Lily who ends up as a courtesan and is then murdered by a client. Ben is afraid of love and I did feel for him. I also felt for Sam, his cousin who always had a tender affection for Lily but never spoke up. If only he had, she might have lived. Catherine's father is a weak and useless man. He ruins her fortune and his family. But I applaud the author for her excellent characterisation - his very weakness made the story for me. He wasn't a villain, he was just weak.
