I really liked this story. There aren't any mysterious, miraculous moments, but there are great characters living everyday lives. Sometimes they go smoothly, sometimes not, but Berg's characters are always fully there.

I may alienate everyone I know by describing this book chapter-by-chapter or issue-by-issue. At once frustrating and inspiring, the authors capture the importance of living off and connecting with the land, as well as industry and government's chokehold on agriculture. Why doesn't every ounce of milk/cream/cheese I consume in Maryland originate in the dairy producing state next door (Pennsylvania)? Why can't I find a local tomato at the grocery store during the peak of summer produce season? Why in the world do I think I should have access to lettuce in December, unless I live in California? If I do nothing else, I will always be a CSA member and try to grow tomatoes and herbs at home.

Best of the series so far? A few questions answered, more seeds planted for the future.

Very exciting. Definitely a page-turner. The kind of book that gets the general public reading. Even gets complicated in a few areas. BUT I didn't care for it too much because I already love to read.. and it was too sensational for me. It was also very explanatory.. instead of letting you read between the lines, it spells things out. It didn't take much effort to read this book, so for anyone who wants a challenge, I wouldn't recommend it.

This book is rather slow at many points, but it's OK overall. It provides what I imagine is a rather accurate portrayal of Poland being overrun by Nazi Germany in 1939. One excellent section of the book is a dialogue between an American reporter and a Nazi officer that offers tremendous insight into the thinking behind the Nazi regime.

I loved this book so much. It gives the reader a detailed insight into the world and politics of OZ. It also provides a deeper understanding of the Wicked Witch of the West and of the meaning of evil. Brilliant read!

Nation by Terry Pratchett (2008) Historical Fiction-Survival Story, 367 pages When a tsunami-like wave wipes out an entire civilization, the sole survivor, Mau, questions the gods’ existence and struggles to find a reason to live. Without his people’s acceptance of his transition into manhood, Mau wavers between a boy’s fears and a man’s determination. Fortunately for him, his reason to continue on is found in the marooned existence of a ghost girl, a trouserman girl who is the sole survivor of her British ship. The two overcome the loss of their cultures, societies, and faiths as they struggle to communicate and do what is right to restore the Nation. As more and more people show up looking for shelter and assistance, Mau becomes a leader and challenges death in order to save others. Throughout the narrative, gods speak to him and question his defiance, but ultimately his innervoices teach him much about being a man, using reasoning, and believing in the unseen. While the book is set in what appears to be 19th century on a small island in the Pacific during British reign, its setting is in “a parallel universe” on one of the Mothering Sunday Islands in the Pelagic Ocean. Although the setting and historical time periods are blurred, the true attraction in Pratchett’s work is the complex lens in which the narrative examines culture, spirituality, humanity, and truth through the eyes of two teenagers, forced to quickly abandon worthless traditions and cling to important moral beliefs. With its twists and turns, Nation takes its readers on a journey full of adventure and discovery. I would highly recommend this book to any young adult reader who enjoys the challenge of weighty subjects and adventure.

What Langguth did so well in "Patriots" did not fly in this book. Perhaps it was an issue of trying to do too much? I found it incredibly difficult to keep up with the enormous number of personalities and again, while I realize the scope of the Vietnam War is enormous, the American Revolution wasn't exactly small fries and he did a great job with that. I'd rather he'd have focused on a few things and done that well than do a mediocre job attempting to cover everything in little bits. It's thorough and it covers a lot but I didn't exactly race to get through this one.
