While I typically love Stegner, this book was quite painful to finish. He is a brilliant writer and is a very skilled storyteller, however this book was very pointless and boring. It is about a woman who had an affair and goes home to her extremely wealthy mother and tries to fix her life but doesn’t quite know how to do it because she has been spoiled her whole life. The story weaves some other issues into the fabric of the story but I was very disappointed with its overall effectiveness. I really struggled to get into the story and had to force myself to finish. I would not recommend this story to anyone and couldn’t find anything valuable for my students. Overall I felt this was a waste of two, almost three, weeks of reading.

still reading this, but from the first 100pgs so far, it's polished, rounded writing. the memories from his childhood are pregnant with meaning and symbolism: lizards, surfing waves, papelitos rojos, security guy at an airport. He tells you what he and his friends did with lizards, then mentions something later in the chapter and ties it back to lizards with such elegance. Then in the next chapter, that symbol is mentioned again in a different context, thus adding unifying themes and adding cohesion. it's exactly what my fiction writing teacher tried to teach us to do. As you're reading, key artifacts from his childhood keep swirlinging in your mind and he never lets you completely forget them b/c all of a sudden he'll bring it back to papelitos rojos or waves or lizards again.

This is a book that succinctly and effectively achieves its goal. Mlodinow provides an overview of how random and chance-oriented processes affect our lives, starting with probability theory and going through statistics. Much of the book is math oriented, but it's told in a very easy-to-understand and entertaining fashion. The book builds to its conclusion at the end. In some ways, this book reminded me of Gladwell's Outliers, but with a more purposeful approach. Mlodinow offers simple but effective tips for living in a world of randomness, especially where humans are prone to depression when they feel that they don't have control over their lives.

I didn't hate this but it was so, so predictable. I liked it enough to finish reading, but I'm not sure I'll read the next book.

I didn't realize the movie was based on a book until recently. I still haven't watched the movie, but I loved the book. I really love books about apocalyptic/disaster/end of the world plots, and this didn't disappoint. The whole idea of an underground city, completely ignorant of where they came from, was well done. The part where Lina draws a blue sky and thinks hey that would be neat, was funny. I guess there are certain things we just take for granted! The only thing I didn't like, was I thought they should have known about where they came from. They were so ignorant to those things, like birds, or candles, etc. that it put them at a disadvantage. I'm excited for the next book in the series though, and especially the third one where its about the Builders and why they are preparing the city of Ember.

Part of the Virgin River Series I really enjoyed this book! Clay and Lilly are great characters, and while I haven't read books leading up to this one, I never got confused with characters etc. who were part of this long-standing series. That is really tricky to do in a series built around a town and cast, so well done! I even had a little stinging in my eyes at the end which took me by surprise. I also wondered the importance of secondary plots as they seemed so unrelated to the core story, but in the end it all really did tie in together. It was lovely. The only thing I noticed occasionally was when the author wanted to make sure that the reader understood certain terminology, and kind of jumped in to TELL it. One instance was explaining what colic is - it read like an author inserting a definition rather than flowing within the dialogue or emotional beats of the story. But that's a minor thing and I have 2 other of Robyn's books on my TBR - and I'll be digging them out soon. :-)

This is hands down one of the greatest books I've ever read. This book will move you and answer many spiritual questions you may have, and even some that never crossed your mind. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Full disclosure: I know the author of this book. It is very difficult to judge a book by an author you know. Unless that author is me, in which case it is easy: prognosis - brilliant! This is the story of an immigrant from Ethiopia and his relationship with his friends, neighbors, and in particular, a small girl in the neighborhood. Not a lot happens, but we learn a lot about the characters and the difficulties facing immigrants in America. The book is getting raves from reviewers, and deservedly so. The only reason I would not give it a higher rating is that I tend to read a different type of book. This is a highly introspective story of a pretty sad person who is surrounded by sad events. My tastes tend toward the ridiculous, plot-heavy, and absurd, so I am probably not the best audience to be reviewing this book. Dinaw writes like a dream, for sure. I wish I had one ounce of his poetic abilities. He has written a beautiful book full of memorable characters, but being the type of person who likes to see shit blowing up, I am afraid I cannot give it the review it deserves.

Another fantastic book written by James L. Rubart. I love his fresh style and well written books. I won this book in a giveaway and am so glad that I now have had the chance to read two books by Mr. Rubart. In Book of Days Cameron searches for the book of past, present and future days. You will read about three people who search for how to forgive themselves and others. It's quite a wonderful book that you won't want to put down. I highly recommend this book. A great book to keep.
