This is seriously a long book, not just literally, but the writing makes it seem so much longer. I get that this book is setting up the story, so I pulled through. I really enjoyed the characters and the story line ... but there is a lot of in between crap. I will read the others and I'm told the books get easier to read ...

I read this for my book club. I believe that I was misled by the comments on the dust jacket. Many authors interviewed remarked that the book was "hilarious." I was into it a while and didn't think it was funny at all. In fact, the situations presented were very serious. Of course, I have read books that were on serious topics, but were still funny, but this was not one of them. It was very quirky, and everyone in my club seemed to like it better than I did. Taken from a real situation, a woman who was involuntarily subjected to a medical study on radioactivity while pregnant in the 1950's, tracks down the doctor responsible with the intention of killing him. She finds him living with his daughter's family in Florida, and, without having her killing plan well formulated, she begins interacting with him and his family. Hilarity does not ensue.

WOW! I had seen the film long ago enough that I only remembered occasional details. I saw the musical a couple of years ago and all I remembered the pants. Interestingly, my nephew was in the musical. His father is black and his mother is white. Several of the cast members told him he had no place in the musical because he was not all black. Yet, if considering their genealogies, how many of them would be? But I digress. Unencumbered by what I remembered, I listened to the audiobook, expertly read by the author, and loved it! Next time I'll have to read it in print form!

The characters started to grow on me a bit in this 2nd book and the world of the Tusranni was detailed and very cool. It was not too long winded and the action was pretty steady. Writing was average, not bad enough to be distracting but not good enough for me ever to notice a beautiful line of prose. Not bad for a fantasy novel written 20 years ago.

I found the ideas fascinating, but something was lacking in the execution. I didn't find the style of narration engaging, and, to be honest, by the end it became a rather slow read.
