This book was recommended by someone who felt a deep spiritual connection to the journey and contrasting beliefs of the father and son. I just did not have the same reaction to their journey. Maybe I went in with too many expectations, but I did not connect the way I wanted to.

I read this book in high school and it greatly influenced my personal and political beliefs. I realize that a lot of people read this book and end up thinking that it is possible for the government to scare people into giving up their civil liberties. However, I read this book way before 9/11 so I took away a very different message. I believe that this book is basically a complicated example of the golden rule(Do on to others as they should do to you) (Although, I found this book to be way more persuasive than my Sunday school teacher). This book is the reason that I am against capital punishment (I was in favor of capital punishment when I first read it). When you seek retribution through violence from a person even if you are justified you are bringing your self down their level. If you kill someone for killing your loved one you are still a killer even if the person deserved to die and even if the world is a better place with out them. Spoiler alert: In this book the main character pledges to the resistance that he will do anything to fight the government even if it meant hurting others. When I read this part I agreed with the main character's choice. After all he was in the right. However, when the main character is being interrogated by the government the reader realizes that in his quest to fight the government he has agreed to use the same tactics. Therefore, the main character is no better then the government is, even if his heart is in the right place. In this book the government claims that it is okay to use torture to gain information and win the war. But the resistance movement also justifies using violence. The author makes the point that once the resistance movement sanctions the use of violence then they are not any better then the government. Once the resistance movement starts using the same techniques as the government then their really is no difference between the two groups.

I think you should read it. Judge Emily Somerset in search of her adult son in revolutionary Peru, joined in the search by adult daughter Amanda. All three in search of purpose as well.

Henry is a writer. When his newest book is turned down by publishers, he is so disillusioned that he gives up on writing altogether. A few months pass, and Henry is still trying to find some way of filling the void left by his writing when he receives a piece of fanmail. In the letter is a story by Flaubert, and a fragment of a play, with a note requesting help. I picked this book up because I was already familiar with the author, due to his previous book, 'Life of Pi', an old favorite of mine. Beatrice and Virgil, while completely different in tone, shares the same broad focus and depth with 'Pi', but is intended for a more adult audience. The book focuses on some hard subjects, and I can honestly say it's been a very long time since I've been so shaken by a work of fiction. It's something that I immediately wanted to re-read, and I'm recommending it to everyone, without reservation.

The beginning was really interesting, the middle was s-l-o-w, but the ending was good. I've been told the next two are better, so I'm looking forward to continuing with this series.

Interesting, but got a little too technical in places.

How do I say that everyone should read this book without sounding lame? Everyone should read this. Amazingly underrated British author. A must for any writer who's trying to connect numerous plot threads in a single novel. Read it!

This was a really creative book. at first i thought it might be a little scary for my 3 year old but while reading it, it was much funnier than i thought. My daughter really enjoyed it and that was the best part. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author and the fact that his range is from children books to adult is amazing.
